Maybe not the Agents of SHIELD that I was expecting but I enjoyed it..
Some nice action scenes plus some light-hearted moments to keep it from being too serious. Looking forward to learning more and see where the story leads this team of agents. The "return" of Agent Coulson is interesting.

there were some laugh out loud funny bits- but also some terrible cheesy parts (the slo-mo "hey, we're awesome" bit after they take down Mike with the paralyzing bullet) I do think they are doing a good job of getting all the movie pieces tied in- Extremis? that was pretty cool working that in. The mention of 'cutting off a head' of Centipede makes me think it will be Hydra and not AIM as the big bad... over-all i liked it- needs to be tightened up a bit- but it was fun. looking forward to next weeks episode |

It was a fun start and I enjoyed it. My wife - who's a big Firefly fan - was saddened that the show wasn't as character-driven as she'd hoped, though. Which I can see.
As for the whole vibe of the show, I think I read somewhere they didn't want to go ''gritty'' and it was supposed to be a more fun ride. Which is understandable, given that the audience will no doubt include a lot of younger kids. I was just talking about this the other day (again, with my wife) about how there's nothing on TV like the old 80s adventure-action shows that had a broader family appeal and I think that's kind of what they were going for. As for Coulson, watch how he reacted when the door flew off the van...

The Short Version:
The fanboy side of me was a tiny bit disappointed. The rational human being side of me generally loved it. The Long Version: Generally it was very entertaining if a bit lighter in tone than I perhaps expected. That's probably a good thing overall, though, as it will make it more "family friendly." The cast seemed solid to me. My only gripe was that Simmons and Skye are a little too blatantly "nerd-bait" characters. Still, the show isn't really about realism, so I can let the whole "hackers/scientists that look like supermodels" bit slide, especially since I don't really have any expectation that they'd ever cast UN-attractive (or average-looking) people in their lead roles just because it'd be more realistic. They want teenagers to tune in and obsess about these characters too, after all. The humor with the "reverse interrogation" was very amusing but I think they overplayed it with "Gramsy?" Also maybe pushing the seemingly-inevitable Agent Ward/Skye romance a little too hard straight out of the gate. All-in-all it was a solid start. Not blow-your-socks-off amazing, but definitely interesting enough to tune in again. Was totally psyched by the flying car, the Extremis appearance, and the brief shot of a bunch of people in masks that subtly evoked the Red Skull (in the preview for next week's episode). Also: Hoping we get more of Cobie Smulders and Ron Glass (I cheered when he popped on screen). Plot wise it was a pretty standard "getting the band together" episode. I suspect the deeper story-arc/who-the-villains-are mythology will come to the fore in subsequent episodes, but hints are already being laid with the "people the doctor was working for" kind of stuff and of course the mystery of Coulson's resurrection (I think they'll do a slight swerve and have him be an LMD...but with the original Coulson's brain implanted). I wouldn't put too much stock in his dodging the door from the van, though...if you remember that short film that was attached to the Captain America DVD, Coulson's more badass than he appears. Fanboy nit-picks: I wanted more easter eggs! More...MORE! Why wasn't that guy Luke Cage?!? Why didn't they use a single SHIELD agent from the comics besides Maria Hill?!? Why....WHYYYYYY?!?! *raises hands to the heavens* Rational side: They don't want to scare off the general audiences by getting too heavy on the nerd-porn. Luke Cage is probably being saved for the big screen, and with agents that aren't from the comics, their fates can be more uncertain if and when Joss decides to shockingly kill one or two of them off. Plus it makes for some fun fanboy geek-out moments if they introduce comic-based agents as guest-stars later on. |

Yeah, true, Coulson is a bad-ass under the unassuming guise but that shot just seemed a little too deliberate, even if it was just a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment.

A thing I did enjoy was the scientist explaining the micro bead headsets that fit INSIDE the ear. I had read on-line 'nit-picks' about Avengers and the 'touching the ear' to talk but not actually having anything there. I assumed it was a micro-transmitter or some such nerd thing anyways- but it was a cool fix to something folks were pointing out as an ERROR in Avengers

I didn't get to watch it due to my f***ing cable company. I did see that ABC will be replaying it again on Thursday night, so I'll watch tomorrow.
