I have to say 2001: A Space Odyssey. The shit was long, boring, had seemingly disconnected parts, (the beginning with the primal ape, the monolith, the leap to the Space Age, the ending with dude in his older self's crib on Jupiter, then ending with him ending up as that "Star Child," shit. Then there were the minutes of no fucking dialogue. Showing a spaceship docking with a space station in real time, Really? Don't get me wrong, forty-five years after it's release the movie is still visually stunning, but to dubbed this movie the greatest science fiction movie of all time is putting a too much on it. Episode V A New Hope, T2 and Aliens are greater movies.

Most movies are overrated. A New Hope is a fairly silly movie overall. It gets worse every time a movie is added to the saga.
Who says 2001 is the greatest movie ever?

I agree, 2001 is not good. How that shit beat Planet of the Apes for best makeup Oscar that year still baffles me.
I'd also throw Scarface and the French Connection in there. Dull dull dull. Yeah the car chase in FC was good but that's it.

there are heaps of "awesome" or "must see" movies I find total rubbish.
2001 is most certainly one of them.I think Kubrick himself is chronically overrated though.from his body of work only Full Metal Jacket & The Shining are any good IMO. |

I agree. 2001 sucks. Most of Kubrick's work has been a waste of my life to watch.

Sorry resurrecting an old thread - I just saw this.
The thing about 2001 is it's spaceship porn. A huge portion of the movie is in the design and, as somebody who digs on ''fully realized'' worlds, I really like it. The plot is fragmented and pretty poorly explained but if you're the sort of person who'll watch time-lapse orbits of the Earth or Felix Baumgartner's jump then this is definitely a movie you'll enjoy some aspects of. As for Kubrick's body of work, Dr. Strangelove is brilliant, 2001 is flawed but visually engaging and A Clockwork Orange is a masterwork of retro-futuristic sci-fi. Although I enjoy The Shining I think IT is probably more overrated than some of his other stuff (although I love all the headfuckery of the Impossible Window and stuff), Full Metal Jacket is really good (although I know it's sometimes seen as his ''sell out'' movie, as it's focused on character and narrative more than any other thing he's done) and Eyes Wide Shut is a movie I'm really unsure about. I'm DVRing it this week and will give it another watch. And then there are a few other lesser-known movies I have to admit I've not seen.

I think 2001 at the time was ahead of it's time when it comes to special effects and style. Kind of how Gravity was such a big hit last year. Yes, when you compare it to what comes out now, you could say it's slow, and boring, but when it came out, it blew everyone away. That's why it's still one of the greatest films of all time.
Star Wars again was great, along with Empire strikes back, but every thing else in the SW franchise is just garbage.
