So the past few days with the discussion of GI JOE: Rise of Cobra. I couldn't help but think about "Masters of the Universe" that came out in 1987 with Dolph Lungren and Skeletor.
The movies are very similar, in the fact that the entire franchaise was reinvented to sell a film. While I personally love "Masters of the Universe", I know many fans do not. Many of the fans do not like this movie, and really it would have made more sense if they kept in Eternia. But He-Man was a simple fun cartoon, and the movie added more depth and grit to the franchise. I think like GI JOE, the movie had to change things to make them more compatible in the real world. Skeletor looks awesome, as do his bounty hunters: Beast Man, Saurod, Blade, and Karg. He also had some interesting troopers, ones that looked as if someone had armed up the Death Star gunners. Whether you like the movie or not, it looks really good for a film where CGI wasn't used to tell the story. I'm glad that GI joe will be a return to "guys in futuristic costumes" as opposed to having computer generated troopers we've been seeing. But I don't know if this will be the selling point of the movie. As the good guys are hard to distinguish from the bad. So Masters of the Universe, was it good or bad? |

Around 1987 MOTU toy line was already on life support ,it was a victim of it's own success in the early 80's ,so the film had no real chance of revitalising the franchise ?
I didn't like that He Man had a gun in the film ,or a mullet either . |

I liked that they made Skeletor more threatning/menacing than the goof in the 80s cartoon. I didnt like they gave He-Man a cape/shoulder pads.
I was surprise that Frank Langella played him, now look at him now, A list actor. even bit surprise Cortney Cox was in it. |

That movie was indeed a "Stinkor"...The sad part is I might've liked it more if it weren't supposed to be a MOTU movie. That said, I look back on this film as a not to be missed cheesy classic. My favorite part has to be when the cop goes head to head with Skeletor's troops with a shotgun...epic movie moment, ha!

Considering the low budget this film had and the fact that it was 1987, I think it's a decent flick. Frank Langella chews up every scene he's in as Skeletor! and Dolph was the perfect He-Man at that time. The franchise was pretty much dead when this movie was made so it really had no chance to begin with but it's competently directed and the music and effects are decent for it's time. Glorious 80's cheeseball movie in my opinion!
On an interesting note: a sequel to this film was written and planned but after the movie's release, the toyline pretty much died. So the script ended up getting re-worked and was made into the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie: Cyborg in 1988 |

I hate that movie. Who decided that He-Man needed to come to Earth anyway? Yes the costumes were great and the new villains were cool but mixing stupid Earthlings into it ruined it for me, even as a kid.
