It had its moments and I liked the design of the characters.
I did not like that most of the film is spent on Earth. I'm sure that was done for budget reasons, and it shows. In a way, it reminds me of 1980's Flash Gordon without the Queen music to get you amped up. And dare I say the performances in MOTU were more...understated...than the Flash film? I've said this in another thread, but the 1980's MOTU film to me was "The Beastmaster." Watch "The Beastmaster" and substitute these characters and you have an adaptation! He-Man for Dar Skeletor for Maax Teela for Kiri Man-At-Arms for Seth Battle Cat for Ru Zoar for the falcon King Randor for King Zed Evil-Lyn for the Witch Women Hordak for the Jun Leader The Horde for the Juns Stratos and the bird-people for the winged creatures Skeletor's thugs for the Death Guards and priests of Ar Castle Greyskull for the Temple of Ar |

I admit it is a guilty pleasure and I'll watch it whenever it's on. Plus I have it on VHS. It's cheesy, He-Man was off but Langella made a great Skeletor. Sure it wasn't the He-Man that I wanted to seee, but it's crappy fun.

Have you ever seen Deathstalker? I haven't but this is a quote from the movie: Deathstalker B-Movie Review "Deathstalker: "Get any poorer and you're going to have to eat that dog." Dog: *GROWL* Deposed King: "I hope it'll be as tasty as the one you're enjoying." With a line like that, I have to see that movie! I really miss these kind of movies. Its weird how a discussion on He-Man turned into one on fantasy sword and sorcery films. But like many things, I suppose they were a product of their time and they would be seen as dinosaurs in this ultra modern, slick age of sci-fi. |

Great movie for it's low budget. Skeletor's makeup was ingenious... it looked like a skull, but the actor could still talk. I always imagined a Captain America movie with his arch-nemesis the Red Skull would look like a red Skeletor.
Loved Meg Foster as Evil-Lyn. Check out some Evil-Lyn on youtube: Skeletor's shock trooper costumes looked great. Probably due to the dark lighting to hide how cheap they actually were. Kudos to the lighting crew. The live-action GI Joe movie better have Cobra Troopers/Vipers look as decent as Skeletor's shock troopers. C'mon Hasbro, I'm setting the bar low here... |
