Okay, let's get this out of the way first, if you haven't seen the movie I'd avoid this thread as there will be spoilers.
I liked it. I knew that Jackson was adding parts, adjusting scenes and bringing in stuff from the Lord of the Rings appendixes, so I knew it wouldn't be The Hobbit exactly. And I was fine with that and I'm even more fine now. I liked the changes that Jackson made. The stuff that got added makes sense and fits in with the Hobbit book. In some ways it makes for more developed characters, especially Thorin. I'm glad to learn where he got the name "Oakenshield" from. That always bothered me. None of the other dwarves had a second name except for him. So now it's explained where that name came from. Overall it was a great movie. Loved Radaghast. My girlfriend cried when the hedgehog died. She loved the rabbit sled. What kind of rabbit's did he say they were? |

I haven't seen it yet, but am kinda stunned at how many bad reviews it is getting from mostly just the critics though; LOTR fans seem to like it well enough.

Just got back from seeing this version "The Hobbit". I had great time seeing at the IMAX 3D.Have been looking forward to and I avoided a good majority of the previews and reviews so far.
I knew what I getting into from the get go, so sitting in a seat for almost 3 hours wasn't a bit of an endurance test. Some the dialogue was had to understand because of the acccents but after the first hour the movie began to pick up some pace. It was a lot visiting an old friend after not seeing them for a couple of years. Kinda awkward at first but then everything began to fall into place. The action scenes and cinematography were well done.My favorite part was in the Goblin cave.It was also nice to have cameos of familar from the LoTR Trilogy make. I think the rabbits from the sled are called Rhosgobel rabbits or something like that. Curious to see how this story will be told in 3 parts but I am looking to next one as the story progresses. As for reports of the critics blasting the movie and claiming that Peter Jackson has "raped" their childhood. They can go to hell.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to going next week sometime. Still haven't decided if I'll go for the 48fps version yet though. I'm prone to get bad headaches, but I really want to see how that looks.

loved it. my boy was wanting to see it so we went today to an imax 3d version- was unbelievable amazing. My son said it was the best movie ever (but at 12 that is typically what he says coming out of the theater every time we see a movie) The escape Goblin town was easily my favorite part- Now I've got a long wait for part two and hopefully not a long wait for the wave 2 figures- I WANT all those damn dwarves NOW!

I went Friday to the matinee, less than 15 people in the theater which was GREAT. I was hoping for the 9 minute Trek preview but it was not shown.
I don't remember an orc leader, but the last time I saw the Hobbit by Rankin and Bass was when it was released on DVD in the early 90's. (need to find and watch again) I loved the misty mountains I wouldn't have minded the whole Orc leader bit but he was too much like God of War. I have not played the game but the look is pretty recognizable. I in fact don't remember a lot of the Hobbit at all, and it has been decades since I read the books. I had a large coffee table art book as a kid and I read that a lot. A Middle-Earth Album: Paintings: Joan Wyatt: 9780500271582: Amazon.com: Books funny thing was I didn't know where the places were but I still thought it was great art. All in all I would go see the Hobbit again. I will admit I fell asleep during the first twenty minutes somewhere. I went right after work. I went to the HFR version in 3D since it was the last matinee. no nausea or any other problems. Some of the camera moves are a bit fast in the action scenes. I do want to see more 48fps movies in the future.

Watched it today and enjoyed it. It was slow to start but knowing that going in, as well as the long running time, made viewing it easier.
I never read Tolkien but enjoyed the Lord of the Rings trilogy so seeing The Hobbit was a no brainer. I didn't think I'd care about a group of dwarves and their quest but it was compelling. Peter Jackson definitely has a grasp on filming Tolkien. I'm not sure anyone other than Peter Jackson could have made it look as good. Visually, it blends well with the previous film, having the same feel. However, that familiarity leads to my only gripe, minor as it may be. The Hobbit felt like Fellowship of the Rings Redux. This movie had many similar plot elements and camera moves - a reluctant hobbit, group traveling on a mission that could kill them all, break at Rivendale to gain next plot element, go underground and barely make it out (Goblin cavern vs.Balrog), final shot of movie is their destination (albeit Hobbit's end is more optimistic than Fellowship) Also, whenever the group got in trouble, Gandolf is used as the Dues Ex Machina. Battling the Trolls and the Goblins. Once is fine but twice in one movie is a bit overdone. |

Middle Earth has never shown/indicated Harry Potter type of visible magic, spells throwing back and forth, it's more of a cerebral kind of thing. There's only so many ways to show that Gandalf is a great wizard. Having him show up helps indicate his power. Comes across as a bit of a Deus, but thats what a wizard is essentially. Comes up with the spell/power when needed. |
