Wanted was an excellent movie, and a great "adaptation" of the comic series.
Sure, the story is only 10% of the comic, but the heart and core of the series was in the movie. I don't want to see a panel for panel, page for page adaptation of the comic. That would be boring and useless for me since I've read the comic. I didn't care for Sin City for that reason. I am skeptical of Watchmen because they made it "faithful" to the comic. That being said, I refuse to see The Spirit. Mostly because I think Frank Miller is a douche bag, but because it's not faithful to the "core" of the Spirit. He's mangled it into what he thinks The Spirit is. Now, people are going to read the comic and think "This isn't the Spirit"! My top 5. How is the core of the Wanted comic in the movie? The "everyman" gets even aspects? It's not even close to being the same thing from one to the other.

The core of the movie is in there. Mark and JG love it, and think the core spirit of the comic is in the movie. They created it, I loved both, and I can't say they are wrong because it's their creation.

Watchmen is over-rated and boring. I can only hope that the movie is BETTER than the comic. Btw, it's just my opinion about the Watchmen. I've been reading and collecting comics for 32 years, and I read The Watchmen about once a year to try and see why people love it so much. I "get" the Watchmen. I know what it's about, and what it's really about. I just think it's boring. If you want to read a story superior to The Watchmen, then read James Robinson's The Golden Age. Just do it with an open mind and not trying to compare it to The Watchmen

Part of what makes Watchmen so iconic isn't just the story (as good as it is), it's what the comic brought about in the industry. It basically changed the entire industy from the kinds/tones of stories, to the storytelling format itself.

It's only been within the last two or so years that comics are getting "fixed" and away from the grim and gritty style. Thank you Geoff Johns, Brad Meltzer, Mark Waid and company. What can I say? I'm a Gold and Silver guy.

You're obviously not reading the Marvel stuff by Brubaker, Bendis and others. That's about as "grim" and "gritty" and "street level" as you can get.
Johns, Meltzer and Waid owe it all to Moore and Watchmen. All modern comics do.

I love the film adaptation of Akira - but it's such a mess, an incomplete (at the time the film was made) epic crammed into a few hours. I'd love to see it remade into a 26-episode OVA - although even then, I don't think it could do the book justice.
Anyway, my list: 10. Snoopy, Come Home 9. Dick Tracy 8. Sin City 7. The Dark Knight 6. Spider-Man 5. Spider-Man II 4. The Incredible Hulk 3. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 2. Iron Man 1. Superman: The Movie I've never read the Oldboy manga, so I don't feel right ranking the film. :b |

Great Comic Book movies:
Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty's best movie, IMHO) Iron Man (Jon Favreau is a genius for staying loyal to the Marvel series) 1989 Batman (Jack Nicholson, enough said) Batman Returns (Michael Keaton does really well with Michelle Pfeiffer here) Batman Begins (Like the ninja training and Batmobile a LOT) Dark Knight (GREAT MOVIE ALL AROUND!) Swamp Thing (I really appreciate this film. Part II was pretty good, too) Flash Gordon (Topol, Max Von Sydow, Timothy Dalton and the Hawkmen ROCK!) Spiderman 1-3 (Sam Raimi is a genius, enough said) X-Men 1-3 ( I really like these. Hugh Jackman did well, and I like Frasier as Beast. I also like CPT Picard as Professor X). Superman (Richard Donner, you rock. Yours is the best Superman film, and I don't care what Lester and the Salkinds say.) Superman II (Richard Donner cut. Amazing version of the film.) 300 (Heck yes!!!!!!) |
