I heard they were almost done with production had adverts ready and then it got yanked...from what I saw it looked sorta cool, but studio bigwigs didn't like it so it got yanked, and now there's no mention of it at all...I guess it got shelved.

I heard it was too "Adult" for kid audiences and that some kids even cried at screenings cause the monsters were too scary...if it gets too kiddified it'll suck and be boring for us who grew up with it.

Actually, "H.R. Pufnstuf" is in the works. And that does suck that they needed to retool it. :( Maybe they need to see that "Simpsons" with the homage to the book as Lisa realizes it's ok to be afraid. She says to them that she thought they were scary at first, but turned out to be funny.
But isn't one of the themes of the movie overcoming your fears? Although I do admit, I've had to get over my fear of giant scary muppets for a while...now it's just cringing a bit when Sweetums shows up. :/

The kids crying is a myth. I work with somebody that was actually at the one, lone screening that was shown (this was about 6-9 months ago I think and as far as I know it was only shown once) with his 8 year-old daughter. He said kids were actually dead silent, completely captivated and totally in awe of the movie. Forest Whitaker was there with his kids and he even said that the movie was awesome for kids to see. It was re-shot because the stupid studio execs are afraid that it might be too smart and intelligent and too adult for kids to enjoy, that's all. My buddy said the movie was unbelievably awesome. Unfortunately, a lot of the voice actors have been already replaced and the movie has gone through a lot of re-shoots. Only hope they kept it the same in tone and didn't ruin it. Spike Jonze supposedly is content with the new cut....we shall see. It's being released in October 2009 just in time for Halloween.

I really want to see both versions too, but I don't expect Warner to ever do that. The studio execs have way too big of an ego and would never want to find out that the first version that they rejected was actually better.

Does anybody remember the Maurice Sendak floor at the Metreon in San Francisco? I remember there being a restaurant themed from his books or something.
