Whaaaaaaaaaat? What did they get wrong?
This was Garth Ennis' Punisher up one side and down the next! Forget the Punisher during the 80's and 90's. That was fluff compared to the Max stuff and the current movie. I'm just trying to figure out what you didn't like about it. Please tell so that I may understand. If I had one complaint it would be that he was too good at fighting. He's a gun guy, and without them, he's kind of beaten. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pitsy for starters. In the first Max storyline 'In the beginning', he was an older short, tough little bastard (reminicent of a Pesci performance) who actually was starting to wear Frank down during their fight. Here, they make him a fat stereotypical Italian guy and a total opposite to his character. They also wasted a cool part from their fight in the comics on a scene in the movie. And he's Ink's dad too?? Uh uh. Other things I thought were horrible -Stevensons accent. He had a real hard time covering it up, and the Irish came through a lot, especially in the beginning -Punisher considering retiring. No way would he ever consider that. Hell, in one of Ennis' last storylines, he discovers he has a baby girl and he STILL can't quit. He knows he would never be able too. -Underground lair. Again? -Looney Bin Jim's performance. The mirror breaking scene was just so ridiculous. And what about all the insane asylum patience Jigsaw spoke of freeing? -The dead agent. Frank does his homework and recon is a big part of his mission (which the Jane version actually got right). This one just seemed to charge in everytime. -The action. Sure, when it was there it was hardcore. But if you ask me, it was really sparse throughout for a movie called 'War Zone'. It was obvious to me the film makers didn't understand the character or the comics they flipped through at all (and the directors thoughts on the skull is proof to me of that). Not that you're saying this, but so many people are saying this movie is awesome because of the gore and violence. But anyone who has read the comics knows there is a lot more substance to Frank than that. Here I felt we got someones vague interpretation of The Punisher from MAX that borderlined on satire. Oh, and I have to disagree with you when it comes to Frank and fighting. He uses guns, sure. But he's no less dangerous without them. He has quite the military resume to back it up. And that was one of the things that I think they did get right, in making him a tank. Maybe my expectations were too high, but having the read the comics for the past few years, I don't see how this was close to the material in anything but appearance. Although I hate the Punisher (he's really a bad guy after all), one of the rules I had when I owned my shop was that I read everything. I can't sell it if I don't read it, and I think that sometimes high expectations will ruin the movie for you. I'm 37, and I've been reading and collecting comics for 32 years. One of my favorite comic characters is The Spirit. Will Eisner was an amazing story teller, and I think that Frank Miller is a fuc#!ng retard, and he's going to ruin the movie. So, my expectations are really, really low. So I agree with you on that point. Another thing is that the comics movies aren't made for us fans. They already have us in their pockets. They want the average movie goer to see it and then buy it on dvd. That said, I didn't like the Sin City movie. It's exactly like the comic, and I already read that. I don't want to see a shot for shot adaptation. Give me the core/heart of the story while showing me something new. I think that's why I really liked the War Zone. It was the heart of the Punisher, without giving me exactly like the comic. I think my favorite Punisher moment was during Civil War when Cap is beating his a$$, and Frank won't fight back. Oh, and there is plenty wrong with Ennis' stories. In an early Max arc when he's being chased in the zoo.....he comes across those polar bears and they're docile? Not in a million years! Him just running through the area would get a rise out of those predators! There are no docile/friendly polar bears. Oh well. I'm sorry you didn't like it, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. My buddy that went with me is the biggest Punisher fan I've seen, and he enjoyed it as well. Maybe next time.

That Zoo situation didn't happen in the MAX comics. That happened during the Ennis' first Marvel Knights run, which he intentionally wrote to have a lot of black comedy.
The quality was just too bad for me even to enjoy as a stand alone movie. Or even as a movie along the lines of Commando (which is kind of what I thought it would be). I don't see how anyone could keep a straight face while watching it. What really raised my expectations I think was how much they talked about the Max comics during the making of the film and how true to it they were going to be. I don't think the heart was there at all. I understand having to adapt a character for a mass audience, but the writing and acting doesn't have to be so bad. Coming in at #8 and only making $4 million, it seems that same average movie goer agrees. As for Frank being a bad guy....anyone who wants to go out and kill rapists, murders, mafioso, sex slave traders, is alright with me. But thats a debate for another time ;) Last edited by Animal Mother; 12-08-2008 at 08:22 PM.. |

J/K I liked the movie too BTW Quote:
I'm sorry that's not Thomas Jane. I don't care of someone bought my ticket, popcorn and a large drink, I refuse to go watch this movie. If it was supposed to be such a blockbuster then they woulda threw it out in the summer. Everyone knows all the really damn good movies come out between April and September. This movie is disappointment central.
I found it very interesting that a woman directed this. Not since S.E. Hinton wrote 'the Outsiders' and 'Rumble Fish' do I think a woman has depicted males in such a way so well. Don't worry no body tells anybody to "stay golden" or anything. However it dose have a softer quality visualy. Sometimes it's reminiscent of sofia copland's work. The director got some really well done shots (Jig Saw speech Gen.Patton style, The church scene w/ frank & the candels, the last scene "Jesus Saves"). She added an artistic quality to the film that I think a lot of Male directors would not begin to touch. However She did leave in all the good stuff we Males enjoy from a film like this. But the Nu Metal sound track was aweful though. Last edited by delta; 12-09-2008 at 10:41 AM.. |

They keep making Punisher movies, and each time it's somebody new, Will the Hulk franchise end up the same? jeez Marvel, figure out this character already, My head's spinning with all the "Actors" used to portray this role already, it's like you don't give people a chance to get comfortable with ANY version of said character and it's a little jarring...with all the effort used in trying to get the punisher "Right" you could'a introduced so many other Heroes to the screen, god knows you're not lacking for any.

I would watch this movie again, impressive violence with comedic undertones occasionally and the lighting in alot of the scenes is beautiful (check out the painted female figure behind the punisher in the first fight scene). The movie wasn't too long-the new batman movie is a bit long. The music was bad. It ruined some of the scenes. The mutliple exploding heads were excellent.
I think the characters could've been developed more-but not the punisher. I like that different people are the same characters in movies, just think about all the different artists who depict characters in comics. Sometimes I hate the way artists depict my fav characters but it is interesting to get a different perspective. I can sympathize with those of you who are real fans of the story. My thing has been x-men since I was in elementary school. Those movies that came out pissed me off on so many things it is ridiculous. And the people chosen for the characters were not sufficient. I do not have any knowledge of The Punisher storyline so I did enjoy it. Last edited by Ruby; 12-15-2008 at 01:07 AM.. |

I used to read those comics when I was younger. They got the story right. Bad guys kill his family, he becomes the Punisher. There is some more to it but thats kinda it. It was cool they finally put Microchip in a punisher movie too.

I am one of the most negative people on this site ( and in the world!) and I really liked it, but probably not so much as a Punisher movie but by itself! I liked all three Punisher movies. Its like the Transformers movie ( and probably the joe movie as well) I loved it becasue they did it. I would rather have them do a bad one than no movie at all ! The exception is I am Legend, they took my favorite story and murdered it with stupid CGI creatures!

Whatever happens to Dolph Lundgren? Did any of you remember that movie back in late '80s....Heck, I don't even remember if it's that good or not.
