I came across the dvd set this weekend. Man it barely brings back any childhood memories. I do remember is was bleak and dark. It had some primitive cgi work. What was the story about? I think Captain Power was the Power Rangers of america. Look at all that shiny metal. It's so glam.

I had the VHS that came with the jet I got for Christmas one year. It was fun....for about a week. Then I forgot about it. I still have Captain powers with my Joes, but everything else is LONG gone.

It was basically just a low budget sci-fi show where you could use toy ships to shoot at things on the screen at times. It aired on Sunday mornings in my town in the late 80s. While the show had a toyline, they didn't really dumb the show down for kids. They even killed off a main hero character on the show. I bought the DVD set. I think the show actually holds up pretty good, but obviously the special effects, which were low budget to begin with, are outdated. J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) was one of the main creative forces behind it.

I remember the show being pretty darn good for what it was and actually at the time it was NOT "low budget" by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, one reason the show got canceled was because it was too freaking expensive. That early-stage CGI they used for some of the bad guys cost some serious bank back in the day, even with as much recycled footage as they used.
So yeah, it looks cheap by todays standards...by late 80's standards, however, it was pretty cutting-edge, particularly for a "Saturday Morning Show." |
