After I put my new Skystriker together I couldn't help but be taken back by it. This thing just brings back so many great memories. One memory I started to recall was watching a movie called The Final Countdown. Its a sci-fi flick from way back. Staring Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen and the USS Nimitz (CVN-68). It was about a US Navy aircraft carrier take goes through a wierd storm off the coast of Hawaii and goes back into time to the day of Dec. 6,1941. The day before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7,1941. I would say more, but just watch the movie to find out what happens.
This movie was really big on showing off America's Naval Air Power. The movie's featured aircraft was the F-14 Tomcat from the Fighting 84 (Jolly Rogers) squadron. There was a really great scene with 2 F-14 tomcats in a dogfight with 2 Japanese Zero's. I got to say that it is my favorite F-14 movie scene in any movie including Top Gun. The F-14 Tomcat is such a beautiful aircraft. And it will forever be my "greatest ever". Sure it's dated and doesn't compare to today's aircraft. But in it's time, it couldn't be touched. There were also a couple of scenes of the USS Nimitz at sea looking like our beloved USS Flagg. In one scene at the beginning of the movie they show the USS Nimitz head on and the numbers on the deck look like 99!!!! I had to put that movie on while I applied the stickers on the Skystriker. If you ever get time to check this movie out. It's on Netflix under sci-fi (I think). |

This was my oldest bro's fav movie; I remember when I was really young he put the VHS of The Final Countdown in the VCR to get me to leave him alone for a couple of hours. LOL. I was totally blown away... I also got to see Delta Force and By Dawn's Early Light because my brother wanted me to leave him alone. Haha.

Except... watching The Final Countdown also makes me want a couple of Intruders and Cosairs (I love the Cosair, lol) too. Those scenes when those F-14s, A-6s & A-7s all take flight together in tight formation were so awesome.

First time I ever watched it was on TBS way back in the early 80's. It was on a Sunday afternoon right after USA's Kung Fu Theater. My dad recorded it on Beta for me. He was career Navy and anything Navy was cool with him back then. It was a good movie and kept me glued to the tube. Even today I can sit through it. |

BEST DOGFIGHT EVER! With the music and camera angles... it really makes you feel patriotic just watching that scene. Are we sure about this? LOL. You sure you weren't on a nostalgia high from putting on the stickers? LOL. I saw six Skystrikers on Friday... 2 at TRU and 4 at Target... one day they will be mine... and I shall watch The Final Countdown when putting them together. Except... watching The Final Countdown also makes me want a couple of Intruders and Cosairs (I love the Cosair, lol) too. Those scenes when those F-14s, A-6s & A-7s all take flight together in tight formation were so awesome. Man, that scene was badass. Yes, the camera angles were on point with the music. Maybe....but the numbers 68 turned upside down is 89. If you pause the movie just right it looks like 99. Either way, having the F-14 launch off the carrier deck in that flick was cool. My Skystriker sits proudly on the deck of my USS Flagg waiting for that green light. Lol....crazy. That's alot of Skystrikers. I just want 1 more and I'll be cool. Those scenes were awesome. I so badly wanted to see them hand a can of woopass to the Japanese Fleet. It would of been epic. |

Having a bunch of modern US navy aircraft taking out the entire WWII Japanese Imperial Fleet... it really would have been the most epic aerial/sea battle every filmed... and probably cost 100 bazillion dollars to film since they didn't have CGI back then. LOL.

I know. I went back in time once. I messed up and my Mom started flirting with me, and my dad was such a dork. It took everything I had not to disappear into nothingness. Luckily I play a mean ass guitar and love Chuck Berry!

I heard this movie mentioned on What's on Joe Mind. I netflix'd it and watched it....The premise is awesome and I think that may have been my downfall. I was expecting a more sci-fi movie and less of a naval/military movie so I was a little let down.
In it's defense though, I was very impressed with all of the military action and seeing what all happens on an aircraft carrier. That alone is worth renting the movie. |

The most impressive thing about the movie is the aerial cinematography. The flight scenes were filmed with real planes and real pilots in them (no cgi's).
Some facts about the F-14's used in the movie: 1. The Blue Underground version with interviews from the VF-84 pilots who flew the sequences. CDR Emory Brown (CAG) mentioned that the Tomcats were spanking new as in newly delivered, "unwrapping the plastic off of them" new. 2. The script called for the Japanese pilot to try to force the F-14 into the water. The pilot who basically did a high yoyo and pulled out real close to the water was LCDR Moon Mullins. He did kick up quite a bit of seawater and was really pushing the envelope with the Tomcat. WWII ace-in-a-day Archie Donahue was one of the Zero pilots. The Zeroes (converted AT-6 Texans) were flying with the throttle to the stops and the F-14s were flying at stall speed (note wings fully extended in most scenes). That was so they could get both aircraft in the same shot at the same time. 3. LCDR Moon Mullins who flew that high yoyo sequence with a very interesting commentary on the "comments' he got from the higher ups when they saw the movie. (see the said move at 5:45 of the video below) (note on #3. This is something I saw while researching the movie and I thought it was quite an interesting fact and a true testament to the skills of the pilots of the US Navy. "The F-14 pilot executed the maneuver while he was on the verge of a stall, trying to stay on the Zero's six and avoid an overshoot, while the Zero was flying with its engine firewalled. To most viewers, the maneuver looked really cool but what actually happened was that he was close to a stall and actually recovered the plane in the last seconds. Plus, there are things that are a no-no in an "A" model that you can easily do in the "D" model because of that crappy TF-30 engines and the pilot pulled it off, so that's an awesome display of skill on the F-14 pilot's part." ) Here is the F-14's vs. A6M Zero's scene from the time the zero's strafed the yacht to the "splash down". This scene makes me fall in love with the F-14 all over again. Enjoy.
