I just got done watching this movie for the 560,436,893094820249th time...and it's so f'ing epic that I almost can't believe it.
Tom Cruise may be a nut, but he helped make one helluva film. Next time you guys sleep on Budo, watch the ninja scene. Just had to make some noise for one of the most epic films of the last 10 yrs. |

I was watching a documentary on the History Channel about Samurais... the dude Ken Watanabe played was real too and like... that's how they all died too... in a suicidal blaze of glory. The documentary never mentioned Tom Cruise though. LOL.
And IMO Last Samurai was a pretty good movie, but not as good as some Japanese sword fighting movies I've seen though.

They should build a statue of Watanabe for his performance of Katsumoto.
That last scene is rough man, I remember having a hard time with the gattling guns. The young commander crying while they were mowed down was really deep. Just moving stuff. As far as Samurai go.....always beautiful, awesome stuff. If you can, check out The Book Of 5 Rings by Mushashi. And give one of my favorite Joes, Budo more love! |

The Last Samurai was one damn beautiful looking movie... I will give it that. And I will go down on record as saying that I think that Samurai Armor is like the coolest thing ever. LOL.
But I think Hollywood... and even Japanese movies too... tend to glamourize the Samurai a bit too much; I doubt real Samurais were that cool; plus, they had to shave the front part of their heads... only ronin could have cool hair. LOL. The documentary mentioned that book... they said like Wall Street traders and Fortune 500 CEOs all read it. LOL. LOL. I loved ARAH Budo too... Marvel's Silver Samurai... not so much. LOL.

Have this film on dvd (I only own movies I REALLY enjoy) and can definitely watch it every so often.
Ken Watanabe was excellent in this film and tbh Cruise was not too bad. From a cinematic POV I think it's a great movie. |

LOL. What do you mean? Like in the movie... and in regards to actual history... Ken Watanabe's character is actually considered to be "the last true samurai" in Japan I think. LOL.
Quote:
That's usually how it works though... Russel Crowe and Johnny Depp too are kind of weird and eccentric in real life, but damn... they are awesome onscreen.

I have a hard time with Last Samurai. It was a great popcorn movie. Not a documentary. Hollywood often gets it wrong.
Tom is miscast. He looks like the smallest Power Ranger. The japanese actors feel like they're in a different movie from Tom. I'm tired to Tom's uber determined against all odds performance style. It's the same shtick as Harrison Ford. This was the 1800's where's the racism? From both sides? I find fault with comparing the American Indians try to protect their way of life to the hereditary elite Samurai. Indians are a disadvantaged minority. The samurai were not. If anything, the ordinary japanese would gladly welcome the end of their brutal overlords. The final suicide charge was over the top. Tom and Katsumoto survived a gatling gun? Are they supermen? Gimme a break! Tom honourably kills Katsumoto in the end. Tom a white man is the lone survivor to tell this story? And he gets the girl. Only in hollywood. And the inaccuracies are plenty. Samurai did have guns in those days. But the writers chose not to use them. To make them more noble like. Ninjas, ninjas, ninjas. Need I say more. Hollywood excess at it's worst. Let's throw in a ninja. It always works. Like showing a naked girl. And the japanese conscripts that bow to the samurai in the finally is so wrong. Ordinary japanese were like cattle to the samurai ruling class. They have no qualm in slitting the underclass throats. Why show such respect to brutal dictators? Hollywood doesn't get it. |
