And just think both movies will decimate, destroy, annihilate, crush, and just stomp GI Joe 2 right into the dirt. It will be like Ghostbusters 2 vs the 1989 Batman movie... GI Joe won't stand a fighting chance!

Gotta remember that to the casual movie goer, they won't know (or care) that this will be Nolan's last Batman movie. To them it's just another sequel.
To the casual movie goer, they won't really know that the lazarus pit makes an appearance (if they even know what it is). Have to remember, to the majority of the people that saw Nolan's Batman movies, they had little to no experience/knowledge with Batman prior to the movies and they don't surf the internet getting all this "insider" information. To the casual movie goer, Avengers will be the bigger draw. It's less dark, easier to bring a kid to (especially after The Dark Knight, I'm sure that how dark that ended up being turned some parents off to bringing their kids to the sequel). Avengers will also benefit from the buzz from Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, which came out recently. Avengers gets a HUGE benefit from coming out so close after those three, so they will still be fresh in the minds the casual movie goer. Folks like us, and comic book fans, make up a VERY small percentage of the movie going public. We're really a small bump. The Uncanny X-Men, usually the top seller each month, only sells around 100,000 copies. Translate that to movie tickets and it's not very much. The Avengers will do better because it'll have a bigger draw (better movie to bring kids, more recognizable due to the recent Thor, Captain America and Iron Man movies).

People aren't going to forget the second highest-grossing movie of all time that easily (it wasn't -THAT- long ago), and if they were really worried about taking their kids, the first one wouldn't have made nearly as much as it did. There was a lot of repeat viewing going on. Plus, Batman as a character, even with the recent Marvel movies, is a better-known and more popular character than any of the Avengers. Millions of "casual moviegoers" are going to remember having seen The Dark Knight in theaters. Avengers is going to have a little more "draw" than the individual Marvel movies (the "curiosity factor"). Which means it's guaranteed at least as much as the lowest, but pretty much "maxes out" at the level of the most successful Marvel studios films thus far (Iron Man 1, unless Captain America really blows up). It's unreasonable to think that it's suddenly going to generate a vastly larger audience than any of the individual marvel films, when a lot of the viewership of the films overlaps with each other. Sure, it's possible it could make more, but if you look at the logic, the history, and the math, it's only really primed to be "the biggest movie of the summer" in the minds of the very fanboys (and girls) whose numbers you dismiss. NONE of the Marvel Studios films have been "the biggest movie of the summer" yet (Iron Man was crushed by The Dark Knight, Iron Man 2 by Toy Story 3). Expecting Avengers to do so when it's up against similar style competition doesn't make much sense. Last edited by Jmacq1; 06-28-2011 at 01:13 PM.. |

Like I wouldn't go to a Hulk or Thor movie, but I would definitely go to a IM and Cap movie, but maybe that is just me. LOL. Hmmm... I have a funny feeling Captain America: The First Avenger is gonna be HUGE. LOL. I'm actually surprised Thor did as well as it did (the good reviews must have helped it a lot). But Captain America and Chris Evans might end up being the biggest draw for The Avenges.

Actually... I was kind of thinking that. LOL. I mean sure there is overlap... but I was sort of thinking that some Marvel fans like a certain character more than others... so each Avenger will draw in their own unique fanbase moviegoer who wouldn't have gone to a IM, Hulk, Thor, Cap, specific movie. Oh... and Hawkeye, forgot about the ten people that like him. LOL. *just joking*

I want Cap to be the biggest of all the Marvel movies thus far...but I don't see it happening, realistically. Last edited by Jmacq1; 06-29-2011 at 07:39 AM.. |

Sorry Troy, but I think you're dead wrong on this.

I have no doubt they'll both be great films, but DKR will win by TENS of millions in terms of box office revenue. |

I didn't even care about Captain America... until I saw the trailer for the movie. Damn... the movie looks good; I mean really, really good. The special effects alone with Chris Evans looks like Benjamin Button caliber effects. I am like the most casual comic book fan there is; so I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way after seeing the trailer. I think a lot of non comic book people are gonna watch Captain America: The First Avenger.

There's really no telling how it will go. Getting to 3 movies alone is really a feat, but Batman has the benefit of 2 being quite a bit better than 1, and 1 was a top notch comic movie. There are exceptions to every "rule", but there really isn't much of a rule, and if anything, the third movie grosses the most based on the stuff I showed. I wouldn't expect DKR to top DK, but I would expect it to be huge. I'm sure there are other franchises I missed, but these are the ones off the top of my head. I just saw the Capt. America trailer and some of the CGI looks fucking awful and other stuff looks great. I hope they cleaned it up for the release. I'm not really a fan of Cap, mostly because he's not very interesting. Brubaker has done a great job with him, from what I'm told. Last edited by RuckusJr; 06-29-2011 at 03:54 AM.. |

Dude, spot on. That "average viewer" argument is ridiculous. Batman is one of the top 3 or 4 superhero franchises in terms of recognizability, with Superman, X-Men, and maybe Spiderman or HUlk creeps in there somewhere. The "average viewer" is going to say "Oh, Batman!" and "Who are the Avengers?" until they see the Avengers trailer, and promptly forget the name of the movie and call it "The movie with Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and the guy with the hammer."
I have no doubt they'll both be great films, but DKR will win by TENS of millions in terms of box office revenue. |
