Well I went, and saw this movie last night, and boy it was really great. It is the best movie I have seen in a long time.
It could have been called "Your old Racisist Grand Dad: the Movie". For some reason the fact that the main character is a blatant racist dose not stop the character from being likeable. It's hard to explain until You have seen it. I think just about everyone has a member of their own Family that is a lot like Eastwood's character in this movie. Mine is My "Unkle" Stanley. Korean War Vet-check Dead Wife-check Bitter at the world-Check Collects guns-check Old Ford in mint condition-check (His is a 66' Thunderbird). When I got into My teens, and began to rebel against My hippy parents I got into old country, and Rock-a-billy records. That lead to Me hanging out with My Unkel Stanely a lot. I had a cousin about My age, and when He began to rebel too, He also turned to the relm of music. His Idea of rebeling was learnig to play songs by Pearl Jam, Gun n' Roses, and whatever else was popular at the time. I could have gave a shit less about those records so I'd go pick guitar with Stanely to Hank Willams tunes. Unkel Stanely had an old 49' Gibson arch top, and everyone in the Family knew it was worth money. However I was the only one who thought it was a cool guitar besides it's value. My cousin, was actually closer to Stanely by blood, so everyone assumed the guitar would go to Him one day, and it did. It did cus' His family stole it from Stanely (probobly because they thought I was trying to steal it Myself). However I think He would have prefered Me to have it due to He, and I being kindred sprits, at least as far as musical taste goes. Oh well, at least I got to know the Man... Back to the movie. If I had read the script on paper it would have sounded like the type of movie I'd like to avoid, but on screen it works VERY well. There are preformances from Child actors, and none of them were annoying or Johathan Taylor Thomas like at all. Infact all the preformances in the movie were pretty flawless. The movie delivered way more laughs than I expected it too. If You had a hidden a camera in the theater, and pointed it at the audience You would have thought they were watching a comedy, not a bitter old Man turned "vigilante" story. The only thing I would have changed about the movie is the fact that they set it in Michigan. It just seemed to Me if they had left that part out, it would have given a little more of a "this could be anywhere in America" type vibe. I understand that the movie being set in Michiagn gave Eastwoods character a connection beyond aesthetics to His 'Torino' so this too is very excusable. I highly recomend it. If You have an older male in Your life (dad, grand dad ect..) I'd ask them to go with Me, not that anyone else woulden't enjoy seeing it as well.

The thing about old men like that is, often they don't feel the need to give ANYONE equal respect until You proove to them that You deserve it. It's not right, and I'm not defending it, but I think a lot of them have that mentality. It's just the way they are, and if we expect them to accept us the way we are we must do the same. That's how You get ahead with people like that, not by setting a flaming bag of poop on their door step on Holloween. While I think that setting a flaming bag of poop on anyones door step is quite humorous, it's not exactaly the kind of thing that opens up lines of communication. I don't think Guys like that even give their own blood family members respect until they "earn" it from them. If a guy like that has a gay son insted of the football player they always wanted, I think they would give them just as much shit, if not more then they do to the Black kid who sacks their groceries. The kid at the grocerie store just sees an old racist man, but the son sees His Dad, and knows that "He's just like that". Again I'm not saying it's right it's just "how they are". BTW The X-mas story was funny Zanzibar Last edited by delta; 01-11-2009 at 12:02 AM.. |

I can't wait to see this. Eastwood is one of the best actors or all time. I have been waiting for him to make a another movie for years now. I really hope he makes one more western before he retires from acting...
