Okay,
So Netflix opened up a whole new world of movies for me. Stuff I would likely never have seen if I didn't subscribe. So I'd like to post a few movies I discovered that were worth the watch and I'd like you to do the same! 'Marwencol' ---------------->Mark Hogancamp's 12" counterpart, Hogan. Photo copyright Mark Hogancamp and Open Face LLC All rights reserved --This documentary film is about Mark Hogancamp, who was attacked by five men outside a bar and beaten nearly to death. He suffered a traumatic brain injury that effectively erased his memory and impedes his every day functioning. He began photographing 12" GI JOE style figures in elaborate dioramas in a town he calls Marwencol. He has developed a complicated and deeply personal narrative that helps him understand his condition and healing. Highly recommended! See trailer here: Marwencol - Official Site - Buy the DVD here MUTANTS --This was a really fun zombie flick. It's French, subtitled and awesome. Really well done in every way, it follows the story of a couple who are trying to survive in a newly zombied world. Suspenseful and somewhat gory, it's well worth the watch. Trailer: HUNTER/PREY --If you recall the excellent Batman: Dead End short by Sandy Collera ( ) like I do, you just may enjoy this full length feature from good ol' Sandy. It was made for less than half a million dollars but looks like it cost quite a bit more. It has a really interesting twist halfway through and over all is an enjoyable flick. It follows a soldier who is chasing a dangerous fugitive assassin after their prison transport ship crashes on an unknown world. The ending is a little weak, but overall it was a lot of fun. Trailer: Lastly for today is one of the most enjoyable movies I've ever seen, despite possibly being the worst movie ever made: STEELE JUSTICE --This movie is nothing but insanity. It appears the writers/director decided to cram in EVERY 80's action movie cliche in existence into this movie. It starts the guy who played the Kobra Kai leader in Karate Kid. If you thought he was overacting in THAT film, you're in for a treat. This movie has it all, machine guns, katanas, snakes wrapped around machine guns, betrayal, intrigue, driverless APCs, poisonous serpents and a 14 year old character that is played by a thirty year old woman. Seriously, this is one of the most unintentionally hilarious movies I have EVER seen and I can't recommend it higher! YOU MUST WATCH JOHN STEELE GRENADE A GUY IN MID-AIR! Trailer: All right I've started, now its up to you to post your favorites!

The Great Happiness Space:
This compelling film explores the rarely seen world of Japanese host boys, men who are paid to entertain wealthy women in exclusive nightclubs. Almost but not quite gigolos, more akin to male geishas, the host boys of Café Rakkyo share their secrets with director Jake Clennell in his first documentary. The narrative focuses on Issei, Osaka's top host boy, but all the characters in this unique subculture are fascinating. |

I'm book marking this thread. I'm always looking for new Instant Netflix recommendations.
Things I recently watched and enjoyed Harpers Island, a fun slasher TV show. It's only 13 episodes so there's no huge commitment to make. Ala a show that's in it's 4th season or whatever. Just decent popcorn viewing. Monsters, it's little indy flick that's kind of like Cloverfield. It has a very cool premise and a unique world. Carriers, post apocalyptic film that takes place after a super virus kills most of the earth's population. Stars Chris Pine (Capt Kirk from the New Star Trek film) Survivors, it's a BBC show that also takes place after a viral apocalypse. 2 seasons, great stuff with some wonderful acting. I need to diversify my viewing patterns...

I watched "Restrepo" recently. Just awesome. It's a documentary about the war in Afghanistan. It covers a Company from the 173rd Airborne in 2007 - 15 month tour. I think it will be the war documentary that defines our generation.
Also, I've been watching the 80's TV series "Hunter"... not bad. It's nothing great, but if you like the 80's, you might give it a try.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena - Awesome. Bloody. Gruesome. Crazy. Romans.
Daniel Tosh - Completely Serious. If you like Tosh.0, you'll probably like his stand up routine. Zapped! - Scott Baio and Willie Aames. That's all you need to know. |

Blackadder
Unique BBC series that follows the Blackadder dynasty from the medieval times up to WW1. Anyone who thinks Rowen "Mr Bean" Atkinson (who plays Edmund Blackadder in each series) is just a physical comedian should check out his deadpan delivery in the face of absurdity. Gun X Sword Really good anime that feels like a weird mix of old western with giant robots. Really good writing and soundtrack though. Rome Brilliant HBO historical drama following several figures at the height of the Roman Empire. Django Spaghetti western starring Franco Nero as a gunfighter named Django (the D is silent) who travels around dragging a coffin behind him. The movie was a little too quirky (and had a rubbish dub) to threaten Eastwood's position as number 1 badass of the old west, but it remains a thoroughly awesome example of the genre (if you don't mind subtitles). Nero's final scene might very well be one of the most badass things I've ever seen in a western. Doctor Horrible's Singalong Blog It's a musical by Joss Whedon about a mad scientist (Neil Patrick Harris) trying to get into the Evil League of Evil and ends up falling in love with a girl who unfortunately seems to only have eyes for his nemesis, Capt Hammer (Nathan Fillion). If you saw the words "musical", "Joss Whedon", "Neil Patrick Harris", and "Nathan Fillion", and you still haven't opened up Netflix, then I seriously worry for you. |
