Well that was a great episode. yes there was change....but ultimately I think it works.
There will be folks foaming at the mouth about Brienne vs Hound since it never happened in the books but I dunno......for me it worked just fine. It did emphasise what a different character Brienne is on the show though. The Imps departure is somewhat stunted for me because he leaves on good terms with Jamie....whereas the books? Its a far from amicable split....and the poor f*cker is left with nothing. I also found Cersei's concern for The Mountain a bit odd....I know in the book Twyin wanted him saved because he wanted to send his head to Dorne to appease the Martells(IIRC not sure) But Cersei being concerned over him? struck me as very out of character. Like I say though absolutely cracking episode and these are minor quibbles really. |

I don't think Cersei was concerned for the Mountain as a person. She just wants to keep her families' number one attack dog around. Especially since now that he killed Oberyn Martell his reputation will only be greater.
MINOR SPOILERS: Gonna be curious to see how people react to these characters crossing the sea and spending two seasons almost-but-not-quite meeting up with Daenerys. As others noted elsewhere: In the show, the whole Tysha incident was explained once and mentioned in passing a couple times, but because we're not "in Tyrion's head" viewers don't see how formative and important it is to him. So bringing it up in this episode might have seemed a bit awkward. That, and perhaps ultimately the "rift" between Jaime and Tyrion is a non-issue to the story. I guess GoT readers will now feel like The Walking Dead readers. Where things are similar, but not the same. It doesn't bother me too much, it actually enhances it because there will be surprises along the way.
Maybe a character or two gets cut, but that's what the books are here for. You can always pick it up and read it. The original story will always be in the books for you to relive.

Just finished watching ....... So I'm guessing Varys decided to get outta dodge since he helped Tyrion? The body count for known characters was kind of high, but I was glad to see one particular among them.

Sure, there are some minor disappointments with the adaptation choices (I REALLY wanted to at least hear about the Mountain "screaming himself to death" in utter agony for days), but by and large I have seen very, very few readers who dismiss the show because of deviation from the source material. Hell, they're gonna have to start deviating sooner or later...they're running out of books to adapt, and there's virtually no way Martin finishes the books before the series is done (Showrunners are saying no more than 8 seasons). Unless by some miracle Martin gets back to his "first three books" levels of output, but I think he's already behind that level with Winds of Winter. Though plenty of rumormongering says the next book will drop next year. |

For me it's not so much about them changing stuff for the show (which they have to, as it's a different beast) but more some portions of the books - and characters - now feel redundant in print.

So apparently, if you start this week and watch one episode per week, by the time you get through the series, it will be time for Season 5 to start....
