Double Trouble from the Dreadnoks this weekend.
“It turns out that the Dreadnoks aren’t satisfied with rigging up road-going vehicles to be uparmed technicals. In both the Florida Everglades and the swamps of New Jersey, they’ve been observed using a crude but novel helicopter/swamp boat hybrid, suggesting greater sophistication on their part than our intel had given them credit for in the past. They call this strange craft the Swampfire. Dreadnok Swampfire by Magnus-L, on Flickr Dreadnok Swampfire by Magnus-L, on Flickr But that's not all. The Dreadnoks are simply becoming a greater menace with every new invention that they bring on the road. Their Earthquake armored front loader is armed to the teeth, with a machine gun, forward firing cannons, and a rear-mounted twin autoloading mortar. Whether they have any actual construction-related aspirations, or simply want to use this monster for sheer destruction and mayhem remains to be seen.” Top by Magnus-L, on Flickr Front by Magnus-L, on Flickr |

HISS Tank (classic style High Speed Sentry)
“The HISS tank series has become a hallmark of Cobra ground forces. Despite its high silhouette and other design limitations, the HISS tank never goes out of style. So much so that Cobra has brought back earlier models that had been retired years ago despite the development of improved designs. These original HISS tanks date back to the Cobra’s very beginnings, and are known to be faster than their better-protected successors – making them well suited for scouting and forward battlefield security. Is the move to bring back these old, arguably outdated combat vehicles to bulk up Cobra ground forces an action of desperation or overconfidence? Some of the Joes may scoff at 1st generation HISS tanks, but Cobra now fields even more armored vehicles than before. And that’s a reason to be very worried.” HISS Tank - Classic design by Magnus-L, on Flickr HISS Tank - Classic design by Magnus-L, on Flickr The first vehicle I ever built for Cobra was my upgraded Hiss Tank – almost nine years ago (on the right, below). I wanted to improve upon an obviously limited design and I’m still really happy with how my original upgraded HISS came out. I’ve built a number of different HISS variants since. HISS Tank original and upgraded HISS Tank by Magnus-L, on Flickr For my classic HISS, (on the left, above) I wanted to have a go at something very close to the original early '80s design, complete with just two roadwheels, no top protection for the gunner, etc. This classic take on the HISS is also designed to be easier for me to produce in quantity – it’s less parts intensive and fairly easy to create multiples of. I’ve intentionally mixed two shades of gray here to represent an older patched- up vehicle being brought back from storage to bulk up Cobra’s line units. Desert HISS Tank Cobra's Desert Scorpions make good use of the original HISS Tank, with its wide tracks that give extra traction on sand and uneven ground. Desert HISS Tank by Magnus-L, on Flickr Jungle HISS Tank Cobra is at work all over the world. Its long tentacles reach into the deepest jungle environments, where its HISS Tanks take advantage of their height to ford rivers. This particular HISS has been crudely modified with an extended hull, giving a limited troop compartment. "G.I.Joe fields several multirole armored vehicles that can be relied on to provide close-in air defense - most notably the Equalizer and the Mean Dog, both of which are also ferocious in the ground combat role. Unlike these weapons systems, the Sky Sweeper is a dedicated air defense platform, with limited uses against ground targets.
It carries a radar-guided double 25mm cannon and four short range Surface-to-Air Missiles that are transported horizontally, but typically rotated 90 degrees and launched vertically. But the Sky Sweeper's most potent contribution to air defense comes in the form of a large search radar that it can unfold and rotate in 360 degrees from its roof. This radar gives much longer range warning of air threats, including aircraft and missiles, and the information it collects is effectively used as a force multiplier, to increase the effectiveness of other anti aircraft weapons systems. The Sky sweeper carries basic short range air defense package of its own and it will enhance existing anti-aircraft capabilities of any G.I.Joe vehicles it operates in tandem with." ----- Sky Sweeper by Magnus-L, on Flickr Sky Sweeper, rear guns by Magnus-L, on Flickr Sky Sweeper, radar deployed by Magnus-L, on Flickr I've done away with the separating bunker that becomes part of a larger "Future Fortress" gestalt, and focused on the basic design and function. Between the role and the name of the Sky Sweeper, I wanted to give it the best possible air defense capabilities I could, so I imagined it as a long-range radar carrier. I even considered giving it no weapons at all, but in the end the side missiles and rear turret won out because it is just more fun that way. |

"G.I.Joe's mission has developed over time from a special operations unit with heavy armor support to encompassing that of field testing-innovative armor designs. As a fast-moving special operations unit, true heavy armor has limited uses for the Joes because of the logistics needed to deploy and support them. For this reason, the Joes have fielded a number of heavily-armed-but-light-to-medium-armored platforms that can be airlifted with far less inconvenience than a 60 ton+ MBT. The Pulverizer has a peculiar elevating cannon that allows it a lower silhouette and to fire from behind cover. This cannon is mounted to fire forward only, so the entire vehicle must turn to traverse its gun. It carries a crew of two."
---- Pulverizer, front/top by Magnus-L, on Flickr Pulverizer, elevated cannon by Magnus-L, on Flickr Pulverizer, elevated cannon by Magnus-L, on Flickr I decided that the only way to do this unusual concept justice was to make it bigger, to give better protection to the driver and give him a gunner to assist him with operating the vehicle. It is still an odd vehicle, but I think I've given it a little more plausibility. |

“The Snow Cat is a missile-armed halftrack, optimized as a tank destroyer, but also capable of engaging certain low flying air targets. It carries four missiles in a rear-mounted box, as well as a pair of experimental ski-torpedoes. It is hampered by somewhat limited firepower and protection for its crew of two, but it has excellent range and mobility, and when it isn't hunting Cobra armored vehicles, it makes for an idea patrol and reconnaissance platform.”
Snow Cat - classic design by Magnus-L, on Flickr Untitled by Magnus-L, on Flickr "The G.I. Joe Battle Cat is a natural development of the classic Snow Cat, a simple and reliable all-terrain vehicle that has uses well beyond the arctic and mountain environs for which it was initially envisioned. It carries the same remote controlled turret as the Ice Dagger, with twin 20mm autocannons and four antiarmor missiles. The Battle Cat carries a crew of two, a driver/commander and a weapons operator." Battle Cat by Magnus-L, on Flickr "The G.I.Joe Sabertooth is a light self-propelled twin 88mm mortar system mounted on the tried and tested all-terrain Snow Cat chassis. Its small size limits its ammunition, but makes it easily deployable. It can fire a devastating salvo of shells and scoot off to a safe location by the time the last rounds hit target." Untitled by Magnus-L, on Flickr Big cats on the prowl by Magnus-L, on Flickr The Snow Cat was one of the first Joe vehicles I built, and at the time I gave it some extra firepower and intentionally made it bigger than the original, in order to make space for a crew of three. I've just revisited the Snow Cat in a version much closer to the look of the classic original. I’ve fit two figs sitting in the cab, by staggering them by a stud. This doesn’t give them much space inside at all, but I think it is worth it in that it has allowed me to shrink the vehicle down a lot. "The classic Cobra Stinger 4WD Night Attack Jeep gets a long awaited reboot, made both wider and longer and with a row of rear seats. This transforms the still very capable Stinger from a missile-armed tank destroyer with a crew of two to a more dynamic heavy jeep with space for four to six troops. In this configuration the missiles are discarded and the vehicle is instead armed with a heavy machine gun, mounted in the roof."
I've wanted to do this for a long time. It isn't a conventional "four door Stinger" but it might as well be, and I suppose technically speaking, it does have four doors. I've stretched my original Stinger, making it a stud wider and 2-3 studs longer. I can fit three men in the back and with one guy in the turret, it's a tight squeeze but workable for up to half a dozen troopers. Paired with my original Stinger in the last picture. https://flic.kr/p/2jrfr5v https://flic.kr/p/2jrfr98 https://flic.kr/p/2jre6F6 |

"The Dolphin catamaran was developed in response to the sobering realization that the G.I.Joe team did not have any seacraft that were truly optimized for combat against other fast and well armed vessels like the lethal Cobra Moray hydrofoil. The Dolphin is similar in size to the Moray, being slightly shorter but also wider, is comparably armed, and carries a crew of four to six. The Dolphin is armed to the teeth, with a 30mm autocannon and a box of four anti aircraft missiles that rotate 360 degrees around the radar mast; and two heavy machine guns and two antishipping missiles facing forward. It also carries side-mounted light machine guns in the rear, up to three torpedoes in the hull, and can also carry depth charges and mines that can be jettisoned from the stern. This formidable arsenal makes the Dolphin well equipped to take on all enemy combatants of similar size in equal footing, and also many vessels that are much larger.
Alternatively, the Dolphin can also carry a squad of troops for boarding ships or landing onshore, but the W.H.A.L.E. is still the ideal G.I.Joe landing craft." "G.I.Joe rumbles into urban conflict zones with the Battle Wagon, to take on the Cobra City Strike Force. The Battle Wagon was developed as G.I.Joe's answer to the Cobra Ringneck, but ended up far larger and more powerful. It has a crew of two, and can carry half a dozen dismounts in the rear who can exit at the back or alternatively onto the roof, and from there onto a Tactical Elevating Platform that can reach roofs and windows for access to buildings from above, or simple act as a firing platform. It has a powerful towhook in front, and is armed with side-mounted heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, and a pair of 20mm autocannons."
----- Battle Wagon by Magnus-L, on Flickr Battle Wagon by Magnus-L, on Flickr Rear, low by Magnus-L, on Flickr Tactical Elevating Platform by Magnus-L, on Flickr Rear ramp down, Tactical Elevating Platform up by Magnus-L, on Flickr The Battle Wagon is one of the really big late-era ARAH vehicles, and was even motorized. I decided the signature 8 barreled "missile launcher" was a bit too much, but I wanted to replace it with something more interesting than just a different big weapon. With its gray and blue colors, the Battle Wagon seemed to me like an urban combat vehicle, and with that in mind, I decided to build on its existing height and give it an elevating fighting platform. No motors on this one, but it does have working suspension on all four wheels and front steering. The whole thing is remarkably stable with a surprisingly low center of gravity. The Battle Wagon gave me a chance to build in an older discontinued shade of gray and regular classic Lego blue, neither of which I work with very often. |

"Cobra Commander's one-of-a kind custom stretch limousine is based on the omnipresent Stinger jeep frame, which has been extended to make space for a spacious armored passenger compartment. Here, the Commander can hold court for up to at least five guests and VIPs. The Stinger Deluxe is unarmed, but is typically escorted by combat vehicles and the fanatically loyal Crimson Guard are constantly on bodyguard duty in their ceremonial uniforms."
