Didn't see a dedicated thread, and figured it deserved one:
Mega Bloks To Be Acquired By Mattel - The Toyark - News I find it amusing that while Hasbro attempts to carve out its out niche within the building block market...Mattel just BUYS the second largest brand out there. While I entertain the idea of MOTU blocks...I'm in a "wait and see" mode. While MOTU would be a great fit and good use of the brand...this IS Mattel we're talking about. If it doesn't have a cartoon or movie, Mattel is just as apt to ignore as do anything with the brand. If they keep the existing design teams...maybe. Either way, we probably won't be seeing the impact of this event until AT LEAST late 2015, if not well into 2016

Despite my lack of interest in Mattel products in the past (outside of a few pieces here and there) for some reason the amount of goodwill Mega has built up with me due to it's new micro figure lines makes me think everything will work out well. I...expect pleasant surprises in the next year or 2 . If Mattel was smart they'd start working on / figuring out how they can allow Mega to work on DC and MOTU themed products immediately. I realize Lego has DC right now but i think DC themed MEGA product would be exactly what many action figure collectors who have a passing interest in brick building would want.
Assasins Creed cant come soon enough. I want to see what type of new sculpts Mega produces for such a drastically different theme when compared to what has come before. Last edited by Plasticfan; 03-02-2014 at 10:49 PM.. |

That is a HUGE boon to Mattel's efforts as, unlike Hasbro, they don't have to build a relationship with retailers to carry their building block lines.

Though in fairness, Mega Blocks HAS managed to build a good relationship with retailers and is pretty much carried by everyone, despite the low market share.
That is a HUGE boon to Mattel's efforts as, unlike Hasbro, they don't have to build a relationship with retailers to carry their building block lines. As a new "block fan" thanks to Mega Bloks i've actually wondered how hard Mega Bloks must have worked to achieve success against such an overwhelming category leader . The brick building market is dominated by one company but Mega has not only been profitable (which is the goal of any company) but has thrived (and this was before the Call of Duty explosion). I find that extremely impressive. I'm very interested in seeing if the other 2 players in the brick building category will release higher quality (i.e. better articulation ) micro figures or if a currently unknown company will knock off Megas design. That would be a win for consumers . |

Smart move business wise. Still second largest partially because the blocks are second rate. They are decent but they are very not near the top of the game, and it shows.
Still I honestly like this move better than Hasbro's. Mega Blocks for all it's flaws is better quality than Oxford. |

So Voltron could be around the corner now i suppose. I know they have made MMPR sets, so they could retool them and reuse for them I would guess?

^ Voltron....another example of a property that i have a passing interest in and , despite the latest AWESOME looking lion sets that came with fully articulated pilot figures, i wouldnt buy in it's full size form. I dont have enough interest to justify the display space.
Now give me the same property in a smaller form with CALL of Duty style pilot figures that can fit in the Lions you build? I'd buy it. |

It went back to Toynami. I don't know about licensing for building blok interpretations. But I think it would end up being cost prohibitive to really do Voltron justice in a building blok form. |
