As someone who previously had zero interest in the "building brick toy genre" i'm really impressed with Mega Bloks. Lego has had 30+ years to convince me , a toy fan, to purchase their product and haven't been able to .
Mega Blocks, with the simple addition of adequately articulated semi realistic micro action figures, has turned me into a paying customer in a matter of 2 days. Someone in Legos research and marketing department has failed to do their job. And it isnt as though i'm drawn to soldier action figures. I'd have been pleased with superheroes, wrestlers, robots or any number of generic well articulated micro action figures. Kudos to Mega Brands Mega Blocks Call of Duty line. They get my money for the effort they've showed. |

this. I don't buy megablocks anymore because of it. 20x worse than kre-o and 100x worse than lego.

They get my money for the effort they've showed. This is supposedly their stance: "A large number of LEGO minifigures use weapons, and are – assumedly – regularly being charged by each others’ weapons as part of children’s role play. In the LEGO Group, we acknowledge that conflict in play is especially prevalent among 4-9-year-old boys. An inner drive and a need to experiment with their own aggressive feelings in order to learn about other people’s aggressions exist in most children. This in turn enables them to handle and recognize conflict in non-play scenarios. As such, the LEGO Group sees conflict play as perfectly acceptable, and an integral part of children’s development. We also acknowledge children’s well-proven ability to tell play from reality. However, to make sure to maintain the right balance between play and conflict, we have adhered to a set of unwritten rules for several years. In 2010, we have formalized these rules in a guideline for the use of conflict and weapons in LEGO products. The basic aim is to avoid realistic weapons and military equipment that children may recognize from hot spots around the world and to refrain from showing violent or frightening situations when communicating about LEGO products. At the same time, the purpose is for the LEGO brand not to be associated with issues that glorify conflicts and unethical or harmful behavior." As for the articulation (or lack thereof) yeah, it's a little frustrating that they've been using the same block-based characters for over 30 years but again, my guess is that's a deliberate move to keep them backwardly compatible. Personally I prefer building vehicles/buildings/scenes over the figures and I dig how Lego works. If the Mega Bloks stuff is as sturdy as that then it's all good but if not then that's a pretty big negative in my view.

Picked up two of the sets over the weekend and really enjoyed putting them together. I had no issues with them falling apart afterwards, though on the snowmobile you have to be a little delicate with attaching the front skis, but once they are in place everything is good. Nice quality on these...

I'm wary of Mega Blocks after purchasing their "Power Rangers Samurai Megazord" set and having one of the knee joints break while it stood on display. Picked up a second set when they hit clearance only to have it happen again.

Mega bloks can be hit or miss on QC issues, but I picked up the drone and boat sets this weekend and love them. The figures are fantastic, and the pieces seem to hold together well. I can't wait to get my hands on more of these sets.

I've read about Lego's stance regarding non violent toys and i applaud that decision. I have no particular loyalty to toy soldiers as a theme. I also can appreciate their desire to maintain backwards compatibility (although not introducing a new lego figure to go along side the classic seems silly for a company as large as lego) . As someone who has extremely little if not flat out zero interest in building block sets as a new paying customer what is important to me is the quality of the micro action figure. If the figure is quality enough to pay for and the building blocks themselves are at least 75% as good as Lego with regard to quality then i'll buy the building block sets that come with figures AND the figure only packs. I'll be that new paying customer that otherwise wouldn't have previously given their building block product the time of day.
On the other hand no matter how quality Lego blocks are i lost interest in their dated mini figures at age 5 so i havent purchased any lego product. It was competing with GI Joe, MOTU, Transformers, RC cars, etc. . I dont hate Lego. I'm indifferent. They weren't even on my radar as a potential purchase. Ironically it's because of Mega Bloks new Call of Duty line that i'm actually open to buying a Lego brick only set lol. Something i would have done long ago if Lego had simply , well, offered more than just the building block experience. Of course i feel the same way about transformers. It wasnt until Hasbro introduced the Human Alliance line that i went from an interested party to a paying customer. Also, i keep reading that Mega Bloks building blocks (which i have no experience with ) are drastically improved from the HALO sets forward from die hard Lego fans that wont accept anything else and other building block fans. I'll find out for myself soon. If they don't disintegrate in my hands i suppose that will be good enough for me. Anyway...back to the Call of Duty sets. The figures look awesome and i cannot wait to begin customizing them. I haven't felt this interested in a toy line for a long time. Quote:
I think it's a very deliberate move on Lego's part, as they don't WANT a realistic army-themed line of toys.

This could be the GI Joe Kre-O killer right here. I already like the proportions of these figures better.

..the positive in that is perhaps Hasbro will improve their micro figures . After all there is no reason why the owners of GI Joe cant just flat out release a GI Joe : Micro series . I'm trying to see the positive in that scenario This review provides a close up handling of the figures with a nice white contrasting background. I'm even more impressed . From 1:30 to 4:46 |
