This was a kickstarter that arrived before Christmas, but I only just got around to opening it. Not sure how many others got it, but it's really well made and interesting. I'm more interested in the AF comics, and there's a good chunk of the book devoted to how it came about, how it was received, and interviews with the creators. I've really enjoyed it so far, but it did make me a little sad that I missed out on Volume 1--I'm really fascinated by Battle Action Force (BAF)and how they shoehorned in the Joes and transformed the palitoy-characters into their Joe versions. I need to go back and read the issues I have, but I also remember really liking the BAF origins, and again, it's neat to read about the transition to Marvel UK and the reasons why it went monthly to European Missions.

Did the transition to G.I. Joe happen prior to Hasbro's purchase of Palitoy?

Hmm...I actually cheated and started with part 2 (the comics section), so I'm not sure. I believe BATTLE was a fairly realistic war comic published by IPC, printed on crappy newspaper. In 85/86 they started integrating Action Force into the title, but 1987 they'd lost the license and it went to Marvel UK where they published Action Force (without the "Battle") and sort of wove their own continuity into some Joe reprints. Action Force was weekly, so it was a mix of Hama's stuff, original things, and some sweet Englehart/Gulacy Shang-Chi, who was billed as Quick Kick's cousin or something!
