More-so than military service, it's the rawness of having been to war. Larry poured all of that into issue 155.

Amongst all the veterans that have returned home from our most recent wars, there's the next Larry Hama, I hope.

Assuming there is a new publisher who upholds the military-rooted premise of the title, someone who served in Desert Storm/Shield probably grew up with the Joes. No need to rule them out. They would probably have a fonder memory of Mr. Hama's prime writing; enough to write nearer to his tendencies, and even they could train up the next-gen's writer.

Not sure if Brian Shearer served but he's got an '80s history, is a proven writer, and has worked on the Joes/Transformers comics for years and years now. I'd put him in that age group.

Interesting! I agree that 155 is a masterpiece, and I appreciate the “street cred” a vet brings to a series, but I tend to pick up all the war comics I can, and I often find that many written by vets are too “heavy” for my tastes, or get bogged down in details/accuracy that slow the story down too much. Somehow I still forgive Hama for the exposition (“that’s a Colt pattern 1911A1 chambered in 45ACP; you can’t shoot because it’s not cocked and locked…”), but if anyone else does that, it drives me crazy.

I really liked Dixon’s run, as well as Allor’s. I even liked Traviss’ take! For ARAH, I’d like a writer who understands the characters, knows military history and keeps up with current events, keeps Joe in that sweet spot of 5-10 years ahead of us in tech, and has a decent military advisor to keep him/her in the lanes. Oh, probably need to keep DD employed so 300+ issues of continuity stay on track too.

I wasn't.

Hama and ARAH are an interesting combo. You have a man who has the bonafides of a vet helping to sell war-ish toys to kids. The result was a pulp-adventure comic with a sprinkling of the "heaviness".

Dixon's Joes were pretty generic, though he homaged Hama and Sunbow enough to make me happy.

Allor's first crack at the Joes (the "Siren's Song" story-arc) introduced the mother-son combo of Siren and Issac, which Traviss then focused on in her run. Ultimately, I found their stories pretty boring.

Van Lente's run was the most fun, imo. I liked how he made references to nearly every era of G.I. Joe.

Costa and Gage told some very poignant stories. Not sure if their's is the right tone for a toy property, though.

To avoid any confusion, I won't dismiss a war-comic if it isn't written by a veteran. I just appreciate the authenticity that having served (especially during a war) brings to said stories.

No worries. We've had enough discussions to know that you weren't clutching your pearls (or beaded chain, in this case). It's a discussion forum. By stating your reasons, you might sway the thoughts of others who hadn't looked at the prospect from your POV.
