Except at that time he was marketing a toyline, which guided his storytelling more or less. Nowadays, I imagine he's been given cart-blanche.

This is what I like about this run. It is less about the toyline marketing and more of a creator-driven comic book.

Whether in the end that is a strength or a weakness with this particular writer is subjective. But now we know what he would be writing when the mandates are not looming over him.

Some of it is great. Some of it is weak. I blame the repetitiveness of the plotlines on his age. Some of my favorite moments come from this second half of ARAH. It is very different in some ways but in other ways we are just seeing him write new, unfamiliar adventures which don't have decades of re-reads behind them.

Having to introduce the toys seemed to hobble him in the original run, but at least the story line moved along in a direction (well, most times). I think not having to introduce toys in this run has made it directionless.
