Killing a character is hardly going to help when they'll just be accidentally resurrected down the line. The problem is, like you say, the absolute lack of stakes. You don't need to kill characters to have stakes. Take the original Springfield story, for example. The splash page has the Joes lugging around their wounded while running away from a Cobra army. Instant stakes established, and you didn't need to kill anybody to establish it. Classic stories like SEs cabin or Borovia had us feeling and worrying for the characters, even though we knew they'd make it.
It's felt for years like the Joes just have cheat codes on. When's the last time Cobra has achieved even a minor victory of any kind? The drama has been completely obliterated by lack of stakes and ninja flips. Technically, #274 wasn't that bad. A big action scene with a ton of Joes. But I just couldn't be arsed to get invested in it in the least. Years of slow-build, lack of stakes and accidental resurrections has made everything meaningless. I think I'm at the point where after #275 I can't even be bothered to read the comic for free. |

So this huge event is basically Snake Eyes gets captured, the Joes lead a big rescue op and save him.... and that's it? Let me guess, the only thing that is actually going to happen in this event is they keep the Crimson Guard girl as a new regular character or make her a Joe too now.... yea probably.
Folks expected something big to happen, some kind of story revelations about Sean, them tackling the duel Snake Eyes thing, killing off some characters or some kind of twist, and so far it looks like its nothing but just one giant 10 part battle. And what makes it worse, it once again all revolves around the same place in Springfield we already had multiple stories set at around Mindbender's hidden lab. This whole setting is so tired, at least show us more springfield, you have a giant battle but you set it in the exact same place again? Quote:
I tend to agree with you. It just isn't believable that every single Joe is infinitely more skilled than every single Cobra--including ninjas. I don't need people to die, but injuries (that don't heal overnight) would be cool. And it would be great if Cobra could claim a victory every now and then. I wish Cobra Commander was a bad ass that wasn't afraid to throw down. I'll continue to buy the title, but a change of pace would be nice...
But it is true, it almost feels like the Cobras are becoming more and more incompetent and useless like Stormtroopers. They always were fodder in the books but they get totally destroyed in droves in these new books. Also the super invincible ninjas are just boring as all hell, and now instead of ninja force characters we have a rag tag bunch of ninjas, a kid and the gramma ninja who keeps using the brick in back shtick is getting super old. |

I love that Larry still writes the book but I do feel like ARAH would benefit from fresh ideas. Maybe that's simply Tom Waltz giving Larry a plot to work with and planning it out in advance. I'm also intrigued by the idea of Larry taking on the editor role and letting someone else write the book.

There are a few things that used to push Larry in the past, that I feel he could benefit from today:
1. New toys must be emphasized. This meant a fresh batch of characters getting time in the sun. Sometimes it was a new character or vehicle that he had to write in. Sometimes it was a returning character in a new outfit/expertise that brought an old friend back into use for a while. I think that Larry should be pushed to include characters that look like the toys being sold in stores. Baroness on the COIL bike. Beachhead, etc. We all know that is part of the nostalgia we have from this book. The figures on the shelf come to life in a well-written story. 2. Animated comic book advertisements. Larry was forced to work a plot of a comic into his overarching narrative. It stretched him, and perhaps occasionally frustrated him, but it gave us some memorable stories. Remember Flint parachuting into a Cobra outpost, and getting captured, only to find out it wasn't Flint, but was Snake-Eyes? That setup was forced by an animated Comic book advertisement, but Larry added the surprise twist. I know that animated commercials are not going to happen, but he should be looking for fresh settings for his stories. More arctic, more desert, more jungle. Urban battles have been overdone lately, in my opinion. Then use the Joes that are experts in that environment, and throw in a specialist of some other kind (Airtight, Lifeline, Psyche-Out, etc.) and a Cobra threat with its appropriate environment troopers, and a couple Cobra individuals that are NOT Dr. Mindbender or Cobra Commander, and you have a fresh story. |

Yes! There are so many great bad guys that's aren't Cobra Commander and Dr. Mindbender. Zartan. Destro. Major Bludd. Tomax/Xamot. Darklon. Scrap Iron. How about the Joes take on these guys (and not have it end in a team up against Cobra)?!?
Batman, X-Men, Avengers, etc. work in part b/c the good guys stay the same while the bad guys rotate. |

Go down that hallway. You, go down that hallway. Old lady with a brick. This is the epic conclusion. Oh, wait, one more issue. Looks like it will be a silent issue. Never saw that gimmick before.

The explanation of granny having a brick in her purse has been done so much, I actually anticipate if in the silent issue there will be a visual explanation that granny has a brick in her purse.
