GI Joe Strikes Back: The 2002 Mass Market Re-integration Of 3-3/4" GI Joe

The original GI Joe A Real American Hero line died in 1995, outlasting even the Star Wars line(s). For a line that now, can be said to struggle to remain in retailer's peripheral vision, outlasting the Star Wars line(s) is something most lines aren't capable of. Yet it happened, but as many say, all good things come to an end. While GI Joe from 1995 would be absent from mass market retail for years, Toys R Us was willing to support it and originally planned to release exclusive Joes in 1996. This was delayed until the following year. For a few years, Toys R Us was the only place to go for small scale GI Joe.

Then in 2002, small scale GI Joe returned to mass market retail, with
GI Joe Vs Cobra
. With designs by Draxhall Jump, and filecards which seemed to tie into the Marvel continuity, the 2002 return to mass market was a fresh take on GI Joe. Yet this does not mean that everything went smoothly.
The 1st thing that shocked fans was the lack of o-ring. Now at this point in time, most of us are used to no o-rings and actually prefer it. However, what we have on modern joes is full articulation. The initial 2002 Joes had
t-crotch
.

T-crotch was not the only shocker. The proportions on many figures varied. By wave 2, after hearing a lot of backlash from fans, some of the figures were retooled with o-ring, and proportions actually suffered more after this. Nonetheless, the o-ring won out, and from later waves onward, t-crotch would not return until the VVV action attack figures.
Truth be told, proportions suffered throughout the entire course of the "new sculpt" lines(2002-06). Things did get better towards the end, but the out of proportion sculpts are very very noticeable. Taking a look back now, fans, be it older or younger, have it
much better
now than us "new sculpt" collectors did back then. Nonetheless, there were still good toys to be had, and collect I did.

Let's talk about the bad. The HISS IV. Did not buy. Did not want. Had cockpit elevating mechanism. Stored 2 troopers in the back. Seemed like it
could
do more, given its size, but just didn't. I did not want a new HISS until I saw the DTC HISS and that wouldn't be for a few more years.
The t-crotch. Admittedly, I bought Storm Shadow VS Snake Eyes from wave 1 and enjoyed the figures a great deal. Yet for a GI Joe, t-crotch was a step back and a t-crotch Joe does not seem right. Small scale GI Joe was known for full articulation. To take it away ruins the appeal.
Another bad thing was that repaints-a-plenty would start with this line.

The good thing about the 2002 line is that Draxhall Jump designs offered a refreshing look at GI Joe. To this day, I think many of those designs have not been done justice. Some of the figures in the 25th Greatest Hits set were actually VERY close to doing this.
What stuck out was the
Night Attack Chopper
(
NAC
). Sure it wasn't released in the 80's, but it stands as one of the best GI Joe helicopters ever designed. This thing is up there with the Tomahawk in my opinion. It's like an Apache on steroids combined with some aspects of the HIND. Up until now, Hasbro has not designed a better helicopter than the NAC. it was not only fun, but not out of proportion, and still looks awesome now. This gunship was a funship. Not only is it one of the best vehicles ever designed during the time, but in my opinion, it's one of the best GI Joe vehicles ever made.

let's not forget how horrid that new FANG was. jeeeesh. i have to say though, the spytroops cobra commander and destro were great. i still pull out the destro from time to time in my diorama.
i have to admit, i really didn't care for most of the vehicles from the JvC-VvV era. they were a tad too cartoony for me, especially that HISS IV. yuck.

I particularly enjoyed many of the Spytroops figures, though I had to buy them all online, as they were not available in Canada. For me VvsV was hit & miss, therefore, I only bought the figures I liked.
Then came the 25th ARAH line which was a dream come true for me, collector-wise. Granted, some of the early 2007 figures had "kinks" to work out, I still loved the theme.
Though I enjoy the ROC movie..I only bought the Night Raven new for $10.00, and bought the Snarler cycle set for customizing.
I enjoyed the POC line, and have at least one fo every figure/vehicle, except for the two TRU exclusive figures, that were never available in Canada.
I am hit& miss on the current Renegades/30th line, but I admit that Hasbro included some of the best figures they have made in a while (ex. Airtight, Sci-Fi, Lifeline, techno Viper). Too bad Kwinn was not released, b/c I really was looking forward to that figure.
Here's hoping the upcoming GIJoe 2 movie line is awesome!
