I'm in the process of developing a squad-based tabletop wargame, for use in WWII, modern and near future settings. I'm using LEGO minifigs as the troops, with each minifig representing one soldier, (rather than one unit), and I hope to bring in some vehicles eventually.
Right now it's based on a turn-based system, where each regular soldier basically gets to either move OR fire once per turn. I'm keeping things simple using just d6s for now. Ideally, I want a game that's fun and dynamic, with a small-scale skirmish battle taking one to four hours. I'm curious if anyone has any tips, especially in regards to: -balancing playability and realism -making special weapons and troop types special without being overpowered -how to incorporate ground vehicles in a cool way. Incidently, does anyone do any wargaming with G.I.Joe action figures? Last edited by Stormgard; 03-15-2011 at 10:53 AM.. |

I haven't done anything like this (yet!), but had been looking into Lego minifigs in tabletop gaming.
I think keeping it simple with turn-based action and d6s is probably for the best, though. I know GURPS uses d6s, and that the system is kind of malleable to any time period, and they have a 'high tech' expansion book that had a lot of information on weapons and vehicles for a WWII setting. I'm not sure how much of that info is online anywhere, but if you ever come across a good deal on that kind of book, it's an excellent resource. (I'm sure there are others, I just only have the GURPS High Tech manual)

What are the odds? I'm currently coming up with a table top "Peace time" military game that focuses mainly on PT, TDY's, and shopping for pants at the PX.

My only tip would be that if you find yourself fighting the super computer for control of the nukes just play tic-tac-toe over and over again until it learns that every scenario is a no-win scenario and hopefully calls off the attack.
