Please tell me somebody has read this EPIC series? I just finished Chronicles of the Black Company on an impulse buy and surprisingly it has jumped into, at the very least, my top ten book series. Im onto the second set and it is quickly gaining stock.
Shorthand: The Black Company is quite possibly the most ruthless mercenary army around. Always working for the winning side, but not necessarily the 'good' side. Their newest commision forces them to question wtf theyre doing. It is a fantasy novel in setting only. It is a very easy read and the writing style is very modern. No fancy elven sparkly crap here. Its dark, dirty, and brutal. The characters are likable and most importantly, easy to understand and relate to. The twists and turn are EXCELLENT; you are fed a few transparent twists and BOOM you get slapped with mindblowing shit you didnt see coming because you were too busy getting excited over the simple stuff. The series has been described as "Vietnam fiction on peyote". Whats not to like?!? =) |

YES! Finally someone else has read this! I read Chronicles a few years back, and read the next installment last year. It's such an easy series to get fully into right away and doesn't get bogged down with all of the usual over the top fantasy stuff these types of books usually have. It's more like reading front line war fiction than fantasy.

I found the Wiki page. Looks interesting. Might check it out if it ever shows up on Kindle. but the guy seems to be even worse at naming characters than I am (which is saying a lot).

Read it and you will understand. Everybody in the Company goes by a nickname that sums up their personality or skills (usually given out by One-Eye or Goblin). Nobody knows each other's real names. It also plays into plotlines that revolve around the "true name" which can have power over you. I thought the same thing as you did until I got a little into the first book.

I have finished the entire set. Best books Ive read, pretty much ever, and thats saying a lot.
Moved on to another series of Glen Cook's, The Dread Empire. Finished up the first omnibus and started the second. First was great but started very slowly. |
