Very random question here. Approximately how big of a crater would a 155-200 mm artillery shell make, if it impacted on dirt/ground? Assume the ground isn't frozen or anything, just in the middle of a field.
I ask because I built a big dio style setup with big craters on it (about 6 feet wide and 3 feet deep), and now I realize now I have no idea whether they are anything close to the right size. Top down view of CBU right flank | Flickr - Photo Sharing! |

I'm no expert, but I assume it would also depend on the type of ammo used? HE, AP, Excalibur, etc?
Also, the difference between 155 and 200mm, and anything in between, would vary greatly, and the terrain itself would vary from spot to spot... To be quite honest, I wouldn't be surprised if your guesses were as accurate as they could be.

It would also depend on the type of fuze. Is it an airburst fuze, proximity, or an impact fuze. Is it a nuclear shell?

I guess I don't have specifics quite on that level. I just want to make sure this doesn't look hopelessly unrealistic for a WWII-to- modern battlefield that has been shelled in prep for an infantry/armor attack.

You're basically talking Howitzers when you are in that size shell, which ran from 140mm to 240mm (I think).
Look at this website - it actually shows you the crater formation and shell fragmentation at different angles. General information of artillery weapons and shells |

Thanks, quite interesting stuff. It didn't occur to me that there would be different fragmentation effect patterns depending on what angle the shell hit at.

The charge, projectile and angle have the largest effect on the size of the crater that will be left. However, if youre talking WWII era like you said, a howitzer is going to leave ROUGHLY a crater about 10 times the size of the casing. Now this is approximate mind you (terrain, angle, projectile & charge size play the biggest factors), but that is what youre looking for, right? Its not the projectile that does the actual damage when a large round like a 200mm is fired mind you, its what that round does to its surroundings that inflicts the damage. For example, if a 200m hits the ground near you, what it tears up and throws is what does the damage including the round itself. If it hits sand, there wont be much damage because it wont throw much and it wont break apart much. The angle also factors in here quite a bit. If it hits a tank, there will be pieces of metal and that round thrown everywhere, plus massive concussion and pressure effects. So a round just fired into an open field wont really make a huge hole like youd see in the movies. Maybe 5-10' across and a few feet deep. Again, depends on the angle and surface it hits.
PS: I have a huge military family and Ive seen and heard quite a bit about military weapons. Being an avid gun collector, shooter and hunter Ive seen up close and personal what a lot of different "smaller" rounds are capable of too. Last edited by bigvig; 02-28-2011 at 05:49 PM.. |

Guess we wouldn't have to figure crater size for an airburst shell. WWII Nuclear howitzer shell - awesome. |
