Ok so apparently this is going on at Stockton Inn (Clarion Inn) february the 27th.
this post isnt meant as a plug, more of a delima. First off I googled this and found nothing, there is nothing on the stockton local events and untill yesterday I didnt find a thing. (a craigslist add was made MJR'S Collectibles Show on the 29th) Has anyone heard of this on any forum? Noel Jumas is running it apparently. I did call the hotel and a room is booked for that day by this person. So the delima is he wants 65 for a table. Ok i thought at first. I heard this from a friend who heard it from another friend who had a flyer. I asked for my friend to find me a copy of the flyer (still waiting on it). I was planning to head there and plug the store for the day (ive never done a show before), hand out flyers and buisness cards. Maybe bring the laptop to hook up if people wanted to buy something (i could pack it and ship it when i got home). I was asked why not bring my product with me and i just think the inventory nightmere it would make gave me a headache. I may bring a few pieces but it made more sense at the time to let people just order and i will give them free shipping and ship it when i got home (anyone whos done a show before does this logic make sense?). so anyhow Back to the delima. $65 a table, I called the number and left a message like 2 weeks ago. The voice box i got i was told to leave my name and email address and such and i will have info sent to me. so i did. I wait a week and nothing. I call back and got ahold of a person claiming the guy running it wasnt there but he would make sure info was sent. I was told he was backloged hense the delay. So i get an email and yes I will post it here: Hello Jason, thank you for your interest in this Collectible show for Sunday, Feb 27-2011. Please send a $65.00 check or money order to the following address: Noel Jumas P.O. Box 691533 Stockton, CA 95269 if you would like to confirm this show at the Stockton Inn (Clarion Inn), you can call Katie at (209)931-3131 x364. if you have any other questions please call me at (209)601-6281....THanks again!!! then following is another email almost forgot, we will be at the show around 6 / 630 so vendors can set up before show opens at 0900....THANKS!!!! Ok here are my problems. 1. do i bring my own tables or are they provided? 2. do i bring my own chairs or are they provided? 3. since its at a hotel confrence room is a power outlet provided? 4. will there be an ATM on site? 5. is there food? 6. Where the F*** is the media (forum posts, radio ads, a facebook page for christ sake, anything telling people (besides a craigslist add) its going on) for this show? 7. If i sent a check to this mysterious po box how are you going to guarantee a spot for my table? what happens if you got 500 checks and there are only 80 spots? I asked for show info and that is all I got. This may be just me and living where i live but i cant help but think the following: 2 guys came up with an idea to run a show. they think lets put the 40 dollar deposit down, charge a reduced rate of 65 for a table (in the voicemail he says normally shows charge 80 but he wants to make this affordable and will only charge 65) get a PO box and see how many suckers we can get to send us checks. If we only get one lets cash it asap and at least we covered our 40 bucks . Then 2 weeks after they decide that hey we better throw an ad on craigslist so people will think its going on for real. I have googled this guys name, email address, shows name, and found no refrence at all to a previous show anywhere. Am i over thinking this and being paranoid or does this sound fishy? Do shows normaly run like this? I'd hate to take the day off work to go out with a table to sit in a room and find out it was a scam. i would be out 65 bucks and a day of work. I plan to do the Sacramento show whenever they get around to anouncing the date for it but this was going to be a filler at first. Now i dont know......

Trust your Spidey sense on this one.
If it's their first show, there's nothing wrong with showing up to see how they run things, what the turnout is like, how the promoters are in person. Then, next time they announce a show, you can decide on whether to invest time and money. |

so an update to this situation. THe gentleman called me to let me know hes having issues aquiring dealers (gee cant figure out why) and is offering some very tempting deals on the tables he has. I am thinking about it but havnt decided on it. I sent him an email with my concerns and am awaiting his reply. I may offer to pay on arival when i get there and this way i can scope it out.

I am enough of a man to admit when i am wrong. The communication was lost because i didnt recieve an email with some attachments with a map of the facility and other needed things. After I talked to him I feel alot better that people will be showing up to this show.
It looks like I got the last spot (i am using one of his tables) and the show is legit. He is planning on doing print advertising starting 2 weeks before the show starts. Apparently when he dropped his table rates he was able to get dealers to commit. In any case anyone here going to go besides me?

I did comic shows for about 2 years and this sounds typical for a small show. One show I did a couple times only promoted to the people on thier mailing list. And you only got on the mailing list if you showed up at the show so good luck getting new people showing. Other shows I have done have promoted the hell out of it, some getting some good comic guests which increases the attendence.
In my experience, the venue provides tables and chairs (although you can bring a more comfortable folding chair). ATM access will depend on the site. Bring your own food or bring a lacky to make a lunch run as promoter are not required to give you lunch. You should get power but be sure to make it known you need power so you can get a table near an outlet. I would try to bring some stuff to set up on a table then when people come by, talk with them about the other stuff you have. Offering free shipping helps. But people going to cons (large or small) like to browse tables and get deals. Having stuff on hand would be key or else people will just walk on by. |
