Hey all you computer-smart guys! I'm talking to you!
So, I've looked at all the options, and a Media Box, Roku, Apple TV, and BluRay are all out because none of them can access everything I want. Hulu Plus and Netflix only get you so far, but there's a lot at NBC.com or on regular Hulu I want to be able to watch. I have a 12mb connection that would be connected via ethernet. So, here's my basic requirements: 1. Be able to stream from NBC, FOX, Hulu, and Youtube 2. Be able to connect to a TV 3. Bluetooth capable, so I can use one of those little handheld doohickeys 4. As cheap as possible! Negotiables: 1. Would prefer compact size, but not required 2. Would also prefer HDMI output, but would be fine with VGA to RCA or whatever. That's it. Doesn't need any optical drives, fancy abilities - just a box that's able to access the internet and process video fast enough that it can be watched on my TV. So, what are my options? How fast a processor do I need to do this? What are you using?

well, the boxee box might be an example, but i know a lot of the content providers are blocking "web access" to their on-site content to connected internet devices like the Google TV box. (i really don't understand why, how is watching it on your couch on tv any different then watching it on your couch on your laptop, ya know?)
but if you want the full plate of web access, I'd actually suggest going for a Mac Mini (watch for them to come into stock in the refurb section of Apples site) or a similar media-oriented Windows PC ~ i know there are some similar tiny Windows boxes running Windows Media Center, i'm just not as familiar with them.

I'm not technical at all and don't know much when it comes to this but my sister got a cable that conncets her laptop to her TV. Everything on the laptop screen is now on her TV. No boxes, transmitters, etc... just a cable.
Don't know if that'll help (probably not since I don't even know what cable it is but I figure you can maybe find some info about it somewhere, or ask someone more knowledgable than me) |

That system would be perfect, and is pretty much what I have in mind, but what i need to know what the minimum requirements are for a computer like that. How cheap can a system be bought that will still stream video content without lag? My PowerBook g4 cant do it.

to the OP: Go to monoprice.com and get the appropriate cable and/or adapters you need super cheap. Maybe get a wireless keyboard designed for living room use. Hook your TV up to your computer via one of the inputs and there you go. |
