I seriously doubt that anything would come of the whole "sue 'em!" line of thought. It's retail, it's some of the most miserable employment in this country. Quit Wal-Mart and work at Chick-fil-a if you absolutely must have Sundays off. The whole religious-on-sunday angle would end up being abused if any retailer that was open on Sunday allowed for those sorts of excuses. Typically I'm the first to criticize WM, but this isn't an unreasonable expectation on their part.

Maybe you should switch churches?

I'm normally one to stand up and defend Wal-Mart, but that is just nuts. I'm sorry they're putting you in that position. Hopefully everything will work out.

But, why would an exception be made for this guy, and not everyone? Because there would be the most insincere religious revival since the early 2000s and no one would be at work. It's retail; you work their hours. There's no need for this to be a defend your faith! debate, simply because he wants Sunday off for church. Every teenager that wants to go out on Saturday night would get wind of this excuse and there would be no one to run the video stores or bag groceries on Sunday -much less over flowing pews. It's simply not a valid excuse for never having to work on Sunday. If Wal-Mart says he can't take off when his wife gives birth, that's one thing. But having every Sunday off when no one else gets that sort of consideration is unreasonable. The OP realizes he's not really got a leg to stand on, which is why he says he will just have to grin and bare it until he gets a new job.

Again, he only has a case if he was hired with the condition of having Sundays off. If it was a "we'll do what we can" sort of thing, which it sounds like it was, then no case.

I think he should go to church early, before Wal-Mart opens. That way he can still attend mass and miss football later on.

What kind of form would have to have been filled out? Even if the previous manager had reached an understanding with him, I doubt the company would be at all responsible for their private agreement.
