Hi all,
So I have a few Best Buy gift cards I've saved from Christmas and my Birthday, so I have about $35-40 there. I'm just looking for something basic/dependable BR-Player that I can connect to the internet, but doesn't have to be wireless. I really do not want to spend more than about $60-$80 (besides the gift cards) so about $120 total. I'm not in rush, so I can wait for a sale if need be. But, I really don't have any idea as to which brands are best, particular models, etc. Dependability matters more to me than any over the top features. Any suggestions?

I splurged on a nice Sony one a few years ago, thing broke. Bought one of those 40$ ones from Walmart to hold me over and it works better than the first one. My suggestion get one with at least a couple HDMI plugs. The Magnavox I have only has 1 so it goes to the TV and I have to Jry rig my surround sound to analog to plug into the dvd player. Definetly worth the extra bucks in my case for the next one.

1stly, do you have an HDTV with HDMI hook ups? just making sure, otherwise all those extra pixels on BR are going to waste.
Nextly ~ if you want to connect to the net, you'll want to make sure it's got onboard wifi (dongles are annoying and from what i've heard a bit less reliable) Thirdly ~ do you have a netflix account? than you'll want one with Netflix onboard. most have a variety of different programs (HULU Plus, Last FM, Pandora, Flickr, Vudu...) basically you need to look @ what you use/want to use and see which model has those Apps. I have an LG i got 2ish years ago w/ Netflix and it's been solid, although it's annoying because the next version had Pandora Radio onboard and they didn't update the firmware for mine >:-(

I do have the HDTV with HDMI outlets. I'm not so much interested in ones with Netflix as I don't have an account and it's just to watch the movies I already own on Blu-Ray and others I plan to buy. (I have been going to my parent's house to watch on their's up until now.)

Also try to find one that will convert regular DVD's into 1080p which makes them look great and thus you have no need to upgrade your entire collection (at least the ones you have for fun and not the "Uber Serious" movies you have).
Look over the spec carefully, when I bought mine I saved $50 when I realized they had the same specs but had one or two little differences that had no effect on me (mostly in online options). Much of it depends on the type of movie buff you are, if you are recreational I might hold off cause while the picture/sound is great it isn't something to get just for that |

Can they now upconvert to 1080p, because they didnt used to be able to, only 1080i, and it DEFINITELY not the same as Blu-Ray to view.

My recommendation is the Sony BD-S470. 3D option should you need that in the future, good online options (Hulu+, Netflix, Amazon on Demand), ability to play from a USB stick (and drive if you know how to do it), and can be bought for about $100 if you shop right.

Pretty much all current BD players are good compared to three years ago. You can get a decent one for about $150.00. I suggest you do some online research for what you need or even use Best Buys site and do comparisons between various models. FYI- Upconverted DVDs to 1080p is not true 1080p, it simulated. It'll look good, but for true 1080p go with bluray disc. |

And I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them to add Google TV to it. They pulled the ability to install other operating systems, and Sony has several GoogleTV offerings out now...I'm guessing it is just a matter of time. |
