That was true for the Nighthawk, but the Raptor totally upped the ante. It's an absolute monster that could easily hold its own even outnumbered 5-1, or even 12 - 2 against F-14s, and win every damn time, and now the Chinese seem to be making their own version. It's like the Predator picking off marines without an Ahnuld or Danny Glover there to even the odds. it's only weakness is how ridiculously expensive it is.
Watch our taxes go up as the US tries to keep ahead of the game. >_>; It's like having a USB device, only compatible with Windows, but connecting to a Mac; physically it's possible, but not compatible. Even the fighter that the F-22 was designed to to replace, the F-15, has more versatility due to not having proprietary avionics architecture. Well.....come to think of it, it's greatest weakness of all is that the F-22 is canceled. USAF is already drawing up plans for its replacement in 15-6 years, NGAD(Next Generation Air Dominance) fighter. China does not want to go to war, why? It would disrupt their booming economy. Even so, with China, a lot of people always mention that their military is huge, et al. I've read debates on this on military forums. The results are usually that the USAF alone could provide a very capable, if not overwhelming defense on behalf of the US, this isn't even taking account the USN, USMC, and Army. |

On the point of US air power being enough to beat China i think that is way off the mark. The US has the most up to date powerfull military. Fact. However air power alone would not stop China. The air dominance and millions of bomb tonnage did very little to stop North Vietnam. Of course the battlefield a war with China would be fought on would increase the effectiveness of US bombing as there would be no jungle to hide in. The devastaion in open fields and mountains would be similar to Iraq. As for the addition of ground forces, again the technological advances open to the US would take a terrible toll on Chinese troops, but the sheer numbers that China would field, combined with the firepower they would bring, i'd expect a long and bloody campaign. Of which a US public would not stand for. The other factor would be the Chinese pychology, no western power could match an asian communist soldier for a continued offensive again.... and again.. and again, until they overwhelmed their objective. and in a prolonged campaign that would be a crucial factor. China would take the losses and shrug them off, the US would not. In a battle with China i think it would again result in stalemate just like the last korean war and we should all hope we never get to find out the reality.

That's the way of things. Whether technology was actually stolen or whether they just took a look at existing designs out there and figured out what they could use themselves, there is nothing new about this. The AK-47 was based on a German assault rifle, and the M-60 was based on the German MG-42. The Bradley was introduced to counter and match the BMP. Since the US is the first country to build 5th Gen fighters, we are setting the bar that everyone else is trying to match or outdo, and of course they save themselves a lot of work by seeing what we came up with first. Of course, we have a head start in countering 5th Gen fighters as well.

Don't worry. The paint will start to rub off and the plane will break apart in mid flight. If those chinese kids in those factories can't make a propper GI Joe consistently without major QC issues, there's no way they're putting a plane together.

With regards to fighter planes, Russia seems to be raising the bar for aerodynamics, the US raising it for avionics, situational awareness, systems integration/networking and advances in stealth. For example, you'd be hard pressed to find a fighter plane currently in service that can match the manueverability of the SU-30MKI in the Indian Air Force, but by the same token, hard pressed to find ANYTHING with the situational awareness of the F-35 due to the DAS. That system is RIDICULOUS in an unbelievably good way. |

More to the interesting point, the intelligence report being revealed showed that those wings aren't legitimate wings and it has never made it off the ground.
The only reason they are putting it on the runways and tarmacs is for speed testing and stress testing on the fuselage. It ran a few tests down the runway and it almost did a mini-wheelie at one point. I'm more interested in their Anti-Ship missles and that Russian Aircraft Carrier.

First flight for the J-20 was rumored to be soon. Even if it turns out to be uber advanced, I think the training that US pilots go through, honed over the decades, will give them the edge over the J-20. As hyped as the Cobra manuever is for the SU-27 and MIG-29 families, the US knows how to counter it. |
