My wife wants a Flip camcorder for Christmas. I actually looked at these a couple of years back and the quality looked crappy. But I understand they've done some updates and it's better video now. I just didn't want to buy my wife a piece of junk, especially since she wants to get video of the kids. Thoughts, anyone?

Perfect case of marketing.
The Flip is junk compared to the Zi8 from Kodak. I know people with both (I own the Zi8 after checking out both) and the Kodak is leaps and bounds ahead of the Flip, or at least it was when I bought mine about a year ago. You can put a card in the Zi8, external battery, external Mic, it has like 4 or 5 settings to cover everything from 720@30fps, 720@60fps, 1080p, etc. I dont have mine handy, but its got numerous settings. The low-light on the Kodak is junk, Ill admit, but you cant really get good, low-light HD for less than a few thousand anyway, so thats really a moot point. I got the Kodak basically because it had been around. The Zi6 was around a while and LOVED by everyone who purchased it. The Flip is brand new and really, I think of it as a high school kids camera. It has no card slot, no external mic or battery jack, no additional setting, etc. I cant EVER see paying equal to, or more than, the same for a lesser product. Kodak>Flip Save your money, get a Zi8. Take this with a grain of salt if you will, its only one mans opinion, but I will add this: Im a professional photographer with more money in camera gear than my TWO vehicles combined, and Im very happy with my Zi8. Now there are WAY better cameras out there, but they arent pocket cams and theyll cost FAR more than $200 bucks. The Zi8 is VERY user friendly. My wife is about as camera-illiterate as one can be, and she can work it. It will retain your settings too, so if you leave it on 720@30fps like I do 99% of the time when Im not using a tripod, it will be on that setting every time I turn on the power. Power on button, hit the red record button and its recording. Simple as that. I promise you, as long as youre not expecting good low-light (and there is basically no zoom either, it just crops when you zoom so the quality goes down) the Zi8 is an AWESOME pocket cam for $200 bucks. Throw a card in it with a $40 dollar external battery in it, and I can record for 8-10 hours depending on the setting. The sound is top notch too.
PS: I am NOT affiliated with Kodak, Im just a camera junkie who likes to help people NOT buy shit. |

Hey man, thanks for the info. I've been looking at the Zi8 and I do think it's a better deal than the Flip. I can get one on sale at Target right now also. However, my wife thinks the Flip is "it" right now because some worker at Target told her its the hottest thing out there! I may have convinced her otherwise, but I do have one last question. Is it easy to put videos on youtube with the zi8? Some reviews I was reading said that it wasn't compared to the Flip, but I can't imagine that it's very hard. I was just wanting to get your opinion on that. Thanks again!

Now if you want just to make short videos, then that's probably the only reason for a Flip. However, I'm disappointed that the OS I'm using (Ubuntu) doesn't really support the editing features. Of course, I'm sadly in a position where I can't get that changed...

Again, its marketing.
Companies make an inferior product and use the money they COULD HAVE spent on parts, instead on marketing. Getting celebrities, big, fancy commercials, etc., and thats where their money is spent. You dont see many Zi8 commercials because they, Kodak, spent their money making a great product. The Flip was made to compete with the Zi8, and Kodaks Zi line has been out for quite some time. Even if youre a camera person, you can get sucked into it: Last Christmas my cousin, who is a HUGE electronics buff, says to me, "Oh SWEET, youve got a flip too!" I said, "Ah, NO! I wouldnt buy one of those POS's." We had a HUGE argument about it and after like an hour I said, "Face it, you got suckered into the hype and bought an inferior product due to marketing." He agreed and a few months later I got a call from him telling me how awesome the Zi8 he bought was and he gave one of his daughters (college kid) his Flip. She loves it, her friends love it, etc. Im not saying its a POS, but at the same price point, there is no reason to buy something thats inferior simply because it has better marketing. Look at the reviews and specs, show them to your wife and make her understand its not as good as the Kodak. As for posting vids, Im sure the Zi8 is as easy. It has a built in USB plug and the software it comes with is super. Ive never posted a vid to youtube with it, but Im sure that even if its more difficult than the Flip, the better product is what you want, ESPECIALLY for the same or less money. |

Well, I pulled the trigger on the zi8! I did some research starting with the articles you posted. I didn't "consult" my wife as this is supposed to be a Christmas present, but the fact that I could get her 2 Sd cards and she could switch them out when one is full would have to convince her that the zi8 is really what she wants.
Plus, I saw it was on sale at Target this week for $149, as opposed to $229 for the minoHD flip she showed me, and as I was getting ready to purchase it online, I did a quick search for accessories and was taken to the Kodak store, where they were offering it for $129! So that's $100 worth of stuff I can get for her new camera now. Thanks for the info!

No prob, man. Thats a great price too. When I got mine I paid $149 and picked up an external mic (sony electret), a rechargeable, external battery, 2 - 16g Extreme cards (on sale for $45 each) and Ive never regretted it. You obviously dont need all that, but when Im shooting a hunting or fishing video, I like that I can set it up and get like 8 hours of video. Flip cant do that.
I use mine mostly on the 720@30fps setting as I find thats the best for general use. When I use a tripod (it has the standard tripod threads on the bottom) Ill use 60fps or sometimes 1080 but I dont see a big difference in the 1080 and it takes more memory. Kodak also has some firmware updates on their site, so when you get it check out their site and make sure its up-to-date. Im sure she'll love it. Its VERY simple to use and takes great video. |

Yeah, I got a protective case for the zi8, and a tripod also. I want to get her a 32gb card because I know that she'll forget to put the vids on a hard drive, so I figure the more space, the better for her. Is the Extreme cards a good brand? What is the difference between a Class 2 card vs. a Class 4 or Class 10? Does that make any difference? I wanna get off as cheap as possible but I don't wanna buy junk either.
