i've given money before to people and never thought about it again. i guess i'm really mad at myself this time for not thinking quicker on my feet and asking a couple of questions, missing the opportunity of finding out what was really up. the tire shop was right there. and who doesn't have a spare? |

Well to the O.P. you aren't 100% sure you got hustled right? Yeah there are scumbags like that out there but if you have 1% of doubt that you DIDN'T get hustled...dwell on that. It's a hard economic time and maybe the guy really needed a tire.....or maybe it was something else he really needed and was ashamed to ask for.
I don't know, dont let it burn you...it's a done deal regardless. When I was younger and couldnt buy beer I used to wait outside the store and ask guys to buy me beer and they could keep the change. It was mostly dudes going in there to buy a 160z can, so they were more than happy to do it....never once did I get burnt. I'm talking about some shady ass areas I prob shouldve never been in too..guess I was lucky. Now, a bit different and this pisses me off to no extent: Every single time I leave the grocery store it's either "Support soccer, cheerleading, football, baseball...the town BS". I used to stop, get my wallet out and throw a buck in it...now I dont anymore. 1st of all they are out there so frequently that it's borderline obnoxious. I really feel bad for the kids but come on man, every damn day? You better atleast give me a cookie or something! The only thing like that I give money to is the Salvation Army and ANYTHING that is going to our Veterans. |

Not saying the guy wasn't shady. However, when I was younger, and cars came with actual full size spares, alot of people would keep the spare and jack from their car when they sold it used. You'd be surprised how many people will buy a car used, and not check if it comes with a spare and jack. It's a really crappy thing to do to someone.
A former girlfriend of mine in highschool who lived way out in the country got stuck in the middle of nowhere in a blizzard for two hours because of it. Her father was furious he didn't go with her to pick out the car, instead of his wife. By the time I tracked her down she was scared pretty damn bad. Her parents were out for the night, and luckily I had told her to call me when she got home to make sure she made it alright. Otherwise, I might have never even bothered to go look.

The only people I have no promblem with being in the middle of the road taking money are the newspaper sellers. 1. They're performing a service and selling something, not just asking for money 2. They have enough common sense to not go sprinting accross the road because someone looked like they might give them $1 |

Perhaps he sold the spare tire and jack for drugs or alcohol.

Once a year I give one person begging 20 dollars. I usually give it to someone who mentions the military in their sign or their speech. Then for the rest of the year I ignore everyone else. It works and when I hand the 20 bucks I could care less what they spend it on

i don't care about the money, or even really if i got hustled.

Why should I care if the money was for a tire or meth? The next time a dude asks for money outside of the grocery store I am going to offer to buy him $20 dollars worth of groceries. But he can only have organic, fat-free, trans-fat free, locally grown, low sodium food. Too much like dictating morality for me - But that is just me - |

I call those the charity beggars. They don't do it in front of stores around here much....no, they do it on street corners and at stop lights (In the median in the middle of the road) I've seen some of these yahoos nearly cause wrecks and stop traffic at lights due to asking for money to support whatever charity there is and I've had some come up to my car waving their hands and trying to get my attention so they can beg for money for their charity. I figured having my window up and ignoring them was hint enough, but they needed to have me look at them and shake my head no before they go on to the next persion.
The only people I have no promblem with being in the middle of the road taking money are the newspaper sellers. 1. They're performing a service and selling something, not just asking for money 2. They have enough common sense to not go sprinting accross the road because someone looked like they might give them $1 Nothing like the bottleneck avenue that merges into mall traffic and a bunch of Vol. Fire fighters standing on the yellow line with buckets for money. Before anyone rolls their eyes at me or castrates me here...I have no prob with firefighters or other civil servants. However..VOLUNTEER Firefighters..in THESE parts anyway are a gross waste of money, and water for that matter. 1st of all, they couldn't close an umbrella nevermind save a life. 2nd of all, when they try they fail and have to call the nearest "city" for "mutual assist". 3rd they buy a new firetruck every few years...do you have any idea how much a f'ing fire truck must cost??? For "wet-downs" carnivals, Christmas parades... 4th I went to volunteer and took the physical...this was just last year. Turns out it's more about pizza parties and buying new gear than it is fighting fires or saving lives. 5: "Real" fire fighters are losing their jobs right now due to the economy and these jokesters have the balls to hold up traffic for your change so they can buy new embroidered jackets. I'd say "don't get me started" but I think it's too late. Sorry for the rant...carry on. |
