I need a little help with this one. I have a cape cod and my toy room is upstairs. My walls from about midway up until they hit the ceiling are at an angle or slant. I want to put one row of shelves at eye level. I'm certain I can fashion an angle bracket to house shelves, but these would hinder the rest of my display room below the shelf. Any ideas on how to do a "floating" style shelf?

But seriously, I thought about mitering the board to the angle of the wall but wasn't sure they'd hold well. I'm kind of hoping someone else has done this and has some solid tip for me since I only want to do it once.

what you need
shelves (strong but thin and light) 2x2's L brackets Eye hooks strong small chain. Screw the 2x2's into the wall at the flat part just below where you want the shelf to be. Along the outside edge of the shelf screw in several eye hooks. Measure them so when the shelf is put up they will be right below the studs in the angled part of the wall or ceiling. Screw in the eye hooks to the studs so they will be aligned with the edge of the shelf and the eye hooks you put into them. Use the chain connect the eye hooks. use the L brackets to add support between the 2x2 and the shelf at the inside part by the wall. If you have enough chainin the right places it will support it enough from that end. The 2x2 will hold it on the backside with the L brackets keeping them in place.

I had considered an idea very similar to this. The only problem is the flat part of the wall is about 6-8 inches lower than I need the shelves.

Echo's got the right idea. What I would do is find a friend or neighbor with a good table saw, one that can angle the saw blade up to 45 degrees.
Using the table saw, cut the 2x2 lengthwise to the angle of the wall. What I would suggest is this piece would then be placed ON TOP of the shelf, not under it. [Since the space where the upper shelf face hits the angled wall would be wasted anyways, might was well use it, and it will make the bottom shelf face cleaner looking, ideal if this will be at eye level.] Drill straight up vertically from the bottom shelf face through the angled 2x2 into the stud. Do that for every stud/16 inches. The eye hooks/chains isn't a bad idea, though I'd be worried it wouldn't have enough tension on it to really serve it's purpose. But if you're just displaying plastic figures and lighter vehicles, it probably wouldn't be a problem. What I would suggest, though, is some 1x1 (or some equivalent: you'll find a lot of ornamental designs at a good hardware store) between the upper shelf face and the wall above it, screwed in. Again, find some friend with a compound miter saw (or these are small enough you can saw yourself), so the top of the 1x1 is flush against the wall. Again, drill straight up vertically from the bottom shelf face up into the 1x1. For the top part, you should screw in perpendicular to the wall, going through the 1x1 first. I would suggest you pre-drill the 1x1 first to prevent splitting. For these supports, you'll only need them every 32"/every second stud. Hope this helps [edit] A couple more things. I would sand the crap out of the corners of the shelves if your doing this "eye level". Round them out as much as possible. 'Nuff said. Also, looking at your picture of your room, I would suggest not going overboard with very wide shelves, otherwise it could effective overshadow and hide your shelving units below it. You would know better than me, but less may be more in this situation. Something to consider. And if go small (8" wide or less), you don't really have to worry about vertical supports, as long as you don't plan on doing pull-ups on them.

Thanks guys, I'm probably gonna try using a blend of these methods and see what happens. I appreciate the tips.
