Burzum...yeah Varg is a "godfather" back in the early 90's in Norway and all...but musically he's pretty laughable. Not that Mayhem and Darkthrone are "musical geniuses" by a long shot..(though there is something to be said for Hellhammer's percussion)--if it wasn't for burning churches and killing Euronymous, no one would know about Burzum. I saw those guys earlier in the year with Devin Townsend Project and Between the Buried and Me. Musically, they are great, but the vocals just don't fit much of the music. A bit too atmospheric for me. I had actually never heard of them until then, even though in the mid 90's they were apparently quite well known in metal circles.
You're right about the vocals, a band like that comming out of Tampa in the mid 90's, signed to Roadrunner with a singer that DID NOT growl is head scratcher. On the cd he uses alot of vocal processing and effects. I love how he sings the verses through a phaser--just sounds cool. I saw a clip live and his vocals kind of sucked. Still I'd love to catch them live--if they played Focus in it's entirety it would be well worth it. |

They asked BTBAM if they could still play their full set and were given the OK, so they still played their full set and then BTBAM played their full set. It ended up being quite a late night. The whole time they were trying to hash out all the issues, Townsend was cracking jokes with the crowd and telling some awesome stories. Quite a charismatic dude, even tho it is hard to get the images of him with his skullet from a few years back out of my mind. They played a few short instrumental versions of some Strapping Young Lad tracks, too. I definitely like SYL better than his solo stuff, but it was still a good set.

Yeah LOL I have NO IDEA why he used to rock that Skullet!! That was horrible!
If you like the "music" of Cynic, check out Candiria...be prepared for large doses of hip hop and jazz fusion as well as hardcore and math/metal. |

I love Candiria. I rock What Doesn't Kill You... all the time and like 300 Percent Density as well. Based on that, it sounds like I definitely need to check out the Cynic albums, then.

The skullet was indeed horrible, lol. From what I've read, he kept it for so long because it was part of his stage persona for SYL, like he felt on stage he was a different person or something.

I saw Candiria way back in 2001 I think. It was at the March Metal Meltdown here in NJ. They were f'ing fantastic! 300% Density is my favorite album...I play some guitar and bass but I don't even attempt Candiria, its just too off the hook. Alot of people gave crap about What Doesnt Kill You..yeah it was progressive and all, but it wasn't a "bad" album it was still great music. There are some video clips of Jamie Jasta filling in for Coma...I think at one point he was supposed to be a permanent member but I'm not 100% on that. |
