Kids dont go outside because their parents dont make them, simple as that. When I was a kid, whether it was 90, 70 and pouring or -10 we were MADE to go outside. Its not that way anymore. As computers became the norm, people spent more time on them (what they hell are we doing in here anyway!). Within the past 5 years cell phone use has skyrocketed. EVERYONE (not myself) owns a cell phone, kids included. My wife is a teacher and kids arent supposed to have them at school yet they all do. They all text each other, PM each other, facebook & myspace each other. Instead of being outside playing, a lot of them sit inside on the computer. Until parenst stop it, it will only get worse.

I wasn't made to go outside when it was raining or extremely cold, but my mother put me out of the house when I was a kid. Most especially on the weekends when she wanted a break from the hassle of my brother and I. But, I never saw it as being forced to go outside. I enjoyed it. I was sick a lot as a kid, so there were actually times my mother had to go looking for me because I was actually too sick to be running around outside.

Nice theory about making anything in America - just have to stay to the Right to Work states.

Corey and others have made some good points and unfortunately they're right. Pure economies of scale dictate the improbability if not impossibility pf toys being manufactured in the US again.
Union laws, manufacturing zoning laws, adequate access to raw materials (need plastics factories with its own union, zoning etc), all the different bilateral, trilateral and multi-lateral trade agreements;water and waste management, access to workers (where are they gonna put the factory and still have access to workers). At the end of the day, the US is a first world nation whose workers demand, expect and enjoy first world pay and conditions. China, for all its economic growth still has a very large poor rural workforce to draw from. Not to mention that because they've been doing it for years, all the wheels have been greased. To start manufacturing toys in the US, a company like Hasbro is looking at an exhorbitant start up cost as well. Even if the factories were still there and intact, it would still take alot of capital to bring them up to a standard mandated by first world manufacturing laws and expectations. It's a nice thought, but Trump is a real estate mogul and property developer, not a manufacturer. Let's face it, not even ARAH was made in the US and that's approaching 30 years ago!. |
