[QUOTE=Zartanman;2030414]I've thought about going that route too but seems like all the sculpting work is becoming computer automated more and more. I guess if you get a degree in Industrial design you'll have a better shot but that degree will set you back around $70 grand, more than a years salary for a whoe lot of people. Two or three years for most people so gotta make sure its worth it.
I've seriously considered it but just seems so risky.[/Quote It is but Im pecking at it, mean time Im giving the customs gig 100% and if that works out, great Just dont give up man

You know, Im going to be totally honest with you:
You CAN NOT worry about the money. You need to pick a career for YOU, not someone else and nobody else can pick it for you. You need to do what makes YOU happy and thats the bottom line. We arent on the planet long enough to work 40+ hours a week at a place we dont like or, god forbid, dread going to. You gotta do what you gotta do man, and thats making you and the people around you happy. If work is work and you couldnt care less, you gotta look at the stuff that is in demand and never going to be out of demand. Legal stuff, medicine, computers, military, teaching, etc. That stuff isnt going anywhere, at least not in our lifetimes. Im a struggling artist. Im technically a professional fly tyer/photographer/writer/artist and I dont make crap. My wife is a teacher (high school band director) and we've got a boy who will be 3 in December who Im home with every day. My wife loves her job and I love mine. We know our schedules and we spend a lot of time together as a family. We dont have a lot of money, but we dont spend it on "stupid crap" like a lot of other people, so we have more than we need (nice house, vehicles, toys, etc.). I grew up basically the same way and really, all my great memories are spending time doing things as a family. If you arent happy doing what youre doing, whats the point? Stashing money away for retirement.....in 30+ years? You gotta figure out your priorities and make a decision yourself on if you want to spend money on junk, buying into the "American Dream", or if you want to be happy living. When you get that figured out, youll be all set. TRUST ME! Good luck to you my friend, Ive been in the same boat as you. Have a major health scare and it puts it all into perspective. At least it did for me. |

So I think I've made a decision. I'm going to continue to persue making Toys. I LOVE It I love making customs and I would love to make my own line of action figures even more. In the mean time I may go back to school to get a Less Expensive generalized degree in Instructional Design or some kind of Instruction based area, another possibility is journalism or marketing. These degrees will run between 30 & 50 K. Not the 70 and up of some of the for profits schools. Also I've been learning that you don't NEED a degree to get into video game design etc. What you need is a great portfolio. So I think once I can get me a good computer again I can pick up some games from Bio ware that have tool sets and set my hand at learning them. If I put together a cool enough module I'll probably get a job with one of the Game Developers. As for what I'm going to do for cash in the mean time? Well I'm gonna keep trying to find a job locally and I guess sell everything I can think of on e-bay, etc. And hope I get some more commissions for my customs soon. Thanks everyone for their replies. Seems a lot of us are in the same boat.

I don't know about you, but I would have swallowed my pride already and got a job at McDonalds or bagging groceries or SOMETHING by now.

I feel for ya, Man. Our shop is closing in February and I'm 36, and I don't even have a degree. I'm not opposed to going to college, but honestly, I've no idea what I want to do. Plus the fact that the economy is so bad, no one is hiring anyhow, I wonder why even bother.
I wish I had some sage advice, or even a good guess. All I can say is hang in there and good luck.

Actually I know of five people off the top of my head that are making a pretty good living doing nothing but customs.
But thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I've been applying for just about any job in my area that I qualify for and I got nothing. Just the way of things, my area is really strapped unemployment here is approaching 14% in this county. I'm in Florida and it relies heavily on Tourism which as we know is dictated by the economy. The Internet is my only hope right now of making a living. I was saying to forget about getting a job for which you are actually qualified. Any job you get is going to have to come second to the actual object; that objective being school. You might have to get a job that is beneath you to make my advice happen. Besides, that makes those jobs that much easier to walk away from when the need for them is over. |
