For all purposes, I will not mention the company I work for here. (Some of you know where I work, but for this purpose, I'm keeping quiet.)
I was given the news that the corporate office is not letting employees dress up for Halloween this year. Why? They claim it's not consistent. (Like you really can't pick out someone that's wearing a name badge with the store logo on it...) The thing is, we were always allowed to dress up within reason. That is the reason I loved to work on Halloween. Everyone knows I love to make my own stuff and wear it out. But now, I'm thinking that getting rid of this after making us stay open on Easter and Thanksgiving is really part of what's making the employees increasingly dissatisfied with this company. Do they not realize that doing things like this lower morale and keep making things worse? The founder valued his employees, but the guy who's in charge doesn't get it. The employees are the ones that do the work, and if we don't have morale, things will just go downhill from there. I am not the only one that is very upset over them doing this. I'm encouraging them to write to the head office to tell them this is a terrible idea. Hopefully they can change their minds and we can have it back next year. But for now, I'm glad I had the foresight to ask for the day before off so I can enjoy the festivities in Chicago, all dressed up. (I do want to find a new job, but I can't right now. It's the damn economy.)

One job I worked at insisted we only use the bathroom on breaks...breaks by the way they expected we punched out for at the register then walk through the entire store and the stock room to get to the bathroom...all the while should a customer ask you a question you HAD to stop and answer...wand you still only got that 15 minute break.
Last time I checked you did hire a human. Even still I just went whenever the hell I had to. |

No doubt. Sometimes people can get way too caught up with work to the point that they lose sight that employees are people that have lives outside of work. Being able to make work feel a little less like work makes a big difference in morale. Morale makes a big difference in productivity and how people perform their job. Also, the better employees tend to leave when the work environment is not good because they can usually find other jobs rather easily.

Well it depends-where do you work? What do you do? Perhaps they are trying to ensure that customers know they are getting employees that are professional and knowlegable to ensure a sale and keep the company afloat.
Think about it-how serious are you going to believe the guy with a knife going through his head with blood dripping down? |

Think about it-how serious are you going to believe the guy with a knife going through his head with blood dripping down? So now I tell my sister and she thinks they're doing this deliberately to get rid of employees so they'll keep paying new ones low wages. And thinks that if I do this, corporate will be on my ass. Um, I'm quite sure I'm not the only one out there who is very upset about this. And also, she hasn't worked for this sort of retailer before, so why does she think she knows about it?! I don't care, I'm going to let them know about this in a manner that won't tick anyone off, but make them realize that they're really going too far. They're not valuing the employee, who really makes the profits they want, and they have to see they have themselves to blame.

Again I point out there are exceptions, but in many cases I have seen corperations go out of thier way to harrass, conjole, and humiliate employees. The justification is of course "You can't get another job anyway so touch." what is weird is this is the exact tactics used by those crazy ex-girlfirends you read about. Generally speaking there is that nice girl out there that will accept you for who you are (both strengths and weaknesses) and will work with you, not against. Employers are the same way, but in the case of a job it's not a bad thing to be looking for a new one while involved with another, wouldn't recomend that with girlfriends. |
