I sold an item to someone a few weeks ago, it turns out the buyer lived in Germany. I agreed to ship it to the buyer as long as he agreed to pay all shipping and handling charges. Buyer agreed and I went out of my way to get this thing shipped.
3 trips to the UPS store, which is a 10 mile round trip each way, trying to downsize the box to get a better quote each time, the box was very large ( it turns out you can only ship internationally by airmail with UPS, was a total mix up, the germany zip code I was given matched another destination as well, they wanted 365.00 to mail it airmail HAHA ) then 3 more trips to the local post office, again repacking the items in a small of a box that I could fit it in. I even had to stop at the local grocery store and buy 6 brown paper bags to try covering the box itself, waiting in line for 15 friggin minutes. My 3rd and final trip to the post office I had to take an hour from work from to go mail it because the buyer kept asking if it was shipped, which there cost me 22 dollars in a lost work hour, because the P.O. was closing at 12 and not open til monday. The smallest box ended up costing 56.00 to mail, 40 miles put on my car ( which is a V8 gas hog Firebird ) an easy 20 to 25 in gas in that thing wasted, and an hours worth of work time I lost. Not to mention the time spent constantly downsizing the package, using tape and other materials I paid for at Wal-mart over and over. I ended up charging 90.00 to ship it, 56.00 actual postage and 34.00 for the extreme hassle I went through, where I still lost money on it. Now the buyer is complaining I overcharged. What the hell? I killed myself over this thing, way more aggravation than it should have been, I didn't want to ship it internationally in the first place, but since he agreed to all fees, I figured I give it a shot. BIG MISTAKE! Has anyone encountered such a problem? Am I wrong for charging the extra I did when I still lost money?? I definitly do not think so, I should have charged my total cost, not to mention the item was 15 years old, complete, in great shape with the original box, and impossible to find for the most part. This has totally soured me on international shipping, except for Canada maybe, since it is still so close, but otherwise forget it! Any feedback????

Unfortunately, a lot of ebay sellers will overcharge on shipping claiming it the rest covers packaging materieals (Most of the time it's a reused box with 3 different kinds of packing peanuts or newspaper inside) This is how some sellers make some extra scratch so a lot of buyers are hypersensitive about shipping charges. I'm sure the buyer has no idea of the hassel you went through (He may not care)
I wouldn't let it sour you on shipping internationally though. Most overseas people I've dealt with expect the shipping to be pretty high because they understand it costs a lot. What may help you in the future is to do some research before hand and find out who has the cheapest flat rate international shipping and just use that. That way you don't have to spend so much time trying to repackage the item to get a better deal. The price is set and if the buyer doesn't like it, they can move on. BTW, I have nothing against Canada, but I gotta tell ya.....I've had some horror stories concerning Canada Post |
