So I'm in a bit of a pickle lately. I guess I should give a little back story. Let's go back in time to 2003 I was working in Retail. I had been in Retail Management since 1997 and we all know what kind of a future that is.
So I decided to go to school. I Started in 2004 Graduated Summa Cum Laude 2006 with an AS Degree in Digital Media Production. GPA was 3.9, National Deans List, Phi Theta Kappa all that stuff. Anyway, I couldn't decide if I should finish my BS at the time or go to work. I ended up getting a job offer for $40 grand a year and I rolled with it. More money than I'd ever made. So this was June 2006. Well August 2007 rolls along and the recession hits. my best friends son comes down with Leukemia at 16 in July. My Boss says she is letting me go. She was very nice she gave me a month to try and find another job. The best I could find was working for this company called Heritage Web Design online they paid $20 per web page you built plus extras. I thought I would be good but it turns out they were HELLA STUPID to deal with much less get my money out of them. I ended up getting unemployment in July 2008 and it lasted until around June of 2010. Since then we have really been scrapping by. The only money I've made is with my customs. I REALLY REALLY want to get that going to where it is my main source of income. But for whatever reasons, my skills, luck, the recession I dunno I'm just not meeting the success that many of you guys are. I'm not begrudging you in anyway but I seriously need to consider if this is where its at for me or not. When I was doing Custom Commissions ten years ago I got all kinds of requests because I was one of the only guys doing it back then. I wish I had never stopped. I've been back into it for about two years but most of my sales has been on e-bay and I hate their fees plus their sales have really started sagging lately. So I've been thinking about going back to school. Lately I've really been thinking about Video Game Design, but most of the colleges that offer that as a degree are For Profit schools and from what I've read online most of them are not worth the paper they are written on after you pay 80 grand for them. My problem is I really need an online school. The only college near by that I could attend is USF in Sarasota. They dont offer any thing video game related. I guess I could just go get a BS IN English/writing as Writing is another one of my career goals. So what I'm trying to decide is should I finish my degree? If so where? What should I be willing to pay for school. I already have 20 grand in Student Loans from my AS Degree which are on an Unemployment Deferment. My only credit card is maxed out. Im working everything off a lap top. I really need to get a new High End Desktop to do any real Graphics work or learn the Video Game stuff. My old Desktop crapped out on me.. and its not really worth repairing because its 5yrs old and out of date. So I guess if any of you have managed to finish reading this book I'm writing, can you give some advice? How do you suggest I get more commissions for my custom work? Have any of you went to a video game design school? Have any of you worked as a professional writer? or in the Video game Profession? Etc... anything is truly appreciated because I hate being 35 and not knowing what career path Im on. Kinda feel like a Dingy floating in the middle of the ocean. LOL Thanks guys!

On a serious note Im in the same boat with you man, my biggest success's customizing wize are whoring out to the public, right now transformers are hot, marvels hot...theres other lines more collector stuff. I try to make whats not available for those lines and most likely will never be made. This is easier with TFs than a new line like MU where anything could be made by Hasbro. My goal long term is to use the customs I have made as a portfolio get into school for toy design and go work for Hasbro. You gotta put the hours in too a customs shop should take 40-50 hours out of your week average and its hard to do. Good luck man

Doing customs for a living seems a little unrealistic to me. I didn't know anyone could get by on that alone.
Get a part time job, apply for government grants and loans to finish your degree and do customs in the .45 of an hour you'll have free to do what you want to do. Take on as much as you reasonably can at once and buckle down. Once you get it done, burn your credit cards and start paying down your loans. |

Unfortunately, I've been applying for just about any job in my area that I qualify for and I got nothing. Just the way of things, my area is really strapped unemployment here is approaching 14% in this county. I'm in Florida and it relies heavily on Tourism which as we know is dictated by the economy. The Internet is my only hope right now of making a living.

I've seriously considered it but just seems so risky.

well my advice to you is if you're seriously thinking about going back to get a BS degree make sure you pursue a degree that you know there is a demand for work out there. (Business, Finance, Engineering, Health/Biotech are the top fields) I say this so you won't waste your time after college and wonder where are all the jobs?! Trust me on this, I have been there and now I'm going back again. You should also look into talking with a career counselor at the school you apply to. They will help set you on the right path picking classes that will help.
