I've seen starting pitchers credited with a lose when they haven't given up the lead run.
But even then, they don't get a win or a loss for the game. So how can they be judged on a stat that they really have no control over? They talk about SP getting into double digit wins. How can it be something they talk about when the stat is realistically meaningless? It's something that as soon as the SP is out of the game, even with a tie or the lead, they have no more control over. It's something that an SP shouldn't be judged on.

And thats another thing that bothers me...
A no-hitter for example... There are hits, they are just caught by the defense in the field and don't register as an on-base. So they aren't "No-Hitters" they are "No-One-On-Base". It's still a hit. The bat still connected with the ball. Just because it's caught and registered as an out doesn't mean it wasn't a hit. The batter hit the ball. He just didn't hit it well enough to get away from the guys in the field or the guy in the field made an excellant play. The ball was still hit!!! Why aren't those counted against a pitcher? A hit is a hit. |

It's not the only thing, there are also stats like ERA. Sometimes a pitcher can be considered having a great year even if his W-L isn't great when he gets no run run support during his starts. It's mostly impressive when a pitcher piles up lots of wins even though there can be so much that can take away a W.
A pitcher should be judged on how well he keeps guys off the bases, period. Run support can make or break a pitcher, but it really shouldn't. Does the pitcher keep guys off the bases? Yes? Then he's a good pitcher. No? Then he sucks. And don't get me started on the different ball parks and the different leagues and how a bad hitter in one league can be a good hitter in another and so on...

Casually+, lol
I pay attention to how the Red Sox are doing, and my favorite players (Kevin Youkilis!!!). But I don't watch every game. I'll have it on in the background most of the time, just cause there are so many games, but don't pay that much in depth attention. Now Football on the other hand...

That's just it... a pitchers stats shouldn't be dependant on the guys in the field or the relief maintaining a win.

The pitcher still gave up a hit, even if it's just contact, so how can it be a no-hitter? The pitcher earned it with help, but it's the pitcher that gets all the attention and the praise for the No-Hitter.

The pitcher is judged INDIVIDUALLY on those stats which are affected by the team. So the team affects the pitchers individual stats which are then used to say how good a pitcher is and/or how much money he deserves in a new contract.

But they are individual stats, not team stats, and reflect a pitcher's individual performance.
