I will play along with the theme of the day...
Can someone explain why there are Red Lobster restaurants on Long Island or in Boston which have some of the finer fish places in the nation? Why is there even an Olive Garden within city limits of Manhattan or Long Island when there are thousands of authentic italian places located there already? |

Since we're on this rant...
I live in San Diego. I'm 20 miles from the Mexican border. But when I want "authentic" Mexican food, I have several hole-in-the-wall taco shops, two sit down style Mexican restaurant, and two cafe style restaurants that have (since the kitchen is run by Mexicans) and extensive Mexican food menu. All of this within walking distance, mind you. So when new restaurant proprietors find an open kitchen and decide to open another fine eating establishment in the neighborhood, what do you suppose they put in? An authentic Italian Restaraunt? - No. Maybe a nice delicatessen (not Subway)? - No. Hell, how about some good ethnic food (like African, Indian, or Mediterranean)? - Not a chance. We get another stinking taco shop.... My thoughts are this: What was going on in their heads that this neighborhood needed ANOTHER taco shop? I mean, it's a pretty bold statement to think that your taco shop is going to be any better than the several other choices available. But you put it in anyway. How non-original can you be? Needless to say, I haven't been to that place nor do I ever plan to. And since I'm really deep in this rant, can anybody tell me who was the brainchild that decided that this: was the abbreviation for "Mexican". I mean, MX is the abbreviation for Mexico. But to shorten Mexican, it would have to be MXCN. So what you're getting isn't Fresh MEXICAN Food. But Fresh Mixing Food. All bs aside, though... This place (formerly called Santana's) is pretty damned good.

My area seems to suffer from an abundance of steak house/chain restaurants. Outback, Longhorn, Grinders, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Damon's, etc. They are all within five minutes of each other. You can look at the menu at one and know more or less what you can order any other.
