My mother got some IHOP coupons so I took her there last week. OH MY GOD!!!! The prices! She got the senior French toast, close to $6 for 2 pieces of white bread & 2 strips of bacon. WTF? I couldn't find anything on the menu for a decent price so I finally settled on the stack of 5 classic pancakes. Again, almost $6 for 5 average sized pancakes. I can go to the store & buy a box of pancake mix for like $1.65 & just add some water & get 5 times as many. But the place is always packed. I don't get it. Majority of the menu was $7.99 or higher. I was tempted to order off the kids menu. lol
So which restaurant do you think is the biggest rip off? The worst prices, crappy food & overall worst value? IHOP easily gets my vote. Applebee's is a close second. Quote:
Unless it's the endless pasta bowl, Olive Garden. Their food is pretty good, but not for the price. I make them regret offering the endless pasta bowl.
I'd say second place belongs to Ruby Tuesdays. I use to love that place, then they raised their prices, and tried to be a more "fine dining" experience. News flash, chances are, if you're a chain restaurant, you'll never be fine dining. I'm looking at you too Olive Garden and Red Lobster. Quote:
Yeah, Subway is really pricey for what you get. For the same 12 bucks, i go to a local place and a 12in Philly Steak with 2x meat, 2x cheese, onions mushrooms and peppers, a basket of hand cut french fries, and a 24oz coke. |

Five Guys. I ate there once and it was like $13. Look, I appreciate large portions, but I can get full on half that with better burgers at In N Out.

I actually like the IHOP near my workplace. i've never had a bad meal there and the service is excellent.
Outback is definitely a rip-off, as is Applebees. I used to HATE Ruby Tuesdays, but I gave them another go recently and was quite pleased. |

Um... I don't think any restaurant is over priced, at least not any of the ones I go to. I eat everywhere from fast food joints to 4 & 5 star restaurants and have never felt cheated. If I'm walking down the street and see a menu I check it out, if I think prices are over the top I don't go in. It's not that I think it's overpriced, it's that it's more than I feel like spending. Being in NYC has changed my views on food and the money vs quality aspect that goes with it.

Applebees. Ugh. I have no problem paying high prices when the quality is up to par. But applebees isn't.

C'mon guys! What about PF CHANGS? Absolutely atrocious prices for a plate of mediocre food, that has maybe 2 servings. They have a "budget dinner" which is called "Chang's for two" for the low price of $39.99+tax+tip+drinks. Seriously, all you pay for is the "atmosphere" and the right to brag to your friends and co-workers about how you had dinner(aka got ripped-off) at "Changs" last night.
My buddy is a server there and tries to stand-up for them every time I rag on the place but I've never eaten there and been happy with it. And to put things into perspective for you: I can eat a 8 hour old pizza pocket from a gas station and be happy as long as it's hot. Then again, given that we have folks here for whom IHOP is apparently a ripoff, I'm really wondering as to what on Earth they think qualifies as NOT a ripoff. IHOP is one of the lower-priced chains around. I mean, it's obviously cheaper to buy your own food and cook it, but if you're talking "going out" about the only thing you're going to find cheaper than IHOP is ordering off the "value menu" at the local fast food joints. Certainly not at any kind of "sit down" restaurant. Same with Olive Garden (vastly prefer Carrabba's myself). It's not the best Italian food in the world, but you're not going to find comparable or better italian food much cheaper. |

IHOP is pretty bad. I've gone there tried to keep it cheap on for two drinks to ruin my budget. It's like 4.50 for OJ.

I really can't stand chain restaurants. For the quality you get, the prices are way too high. I just don't see a reason to ever go to places like Applebees. if you want cheap food you might as well go to McDonalds and not pay $20 for it.
The worst offenders though are the "high class" chains like PF Changs, Outback, or Cheesecake factory. I can walk to China Town and get way better food then Changs sells, and it would be like $5. Outback's steaks are absolutely worthless, and they still charge $25 for one, and Cheesecake Factory is just a mess. Huge portions of crap food for a lot of money. At least their cheesecake is passable. The only chains that I'm ok with going to are the pasta places like Olive Garden or Pasta Pomodoro. They aren't great by any means, but their food is about as good as if I made some pasta at home and dumped a bottle of Ragu on it. Kind of hard to screw up. Personally I'd much rather spend $50 on an amazing meal rather then $30 on crap. |

Cheese Cake Factory and Romano's way over priced and while the Cheese Cake Factory has pretty decent food Romano's is crap but hey at Romano's you can color on the table cause they put paper down for you. The server's write their name on the table so you can rember. When we walked out there was a table where someone wrote is gay under the server's name. And I thought why didn't i think of that. LOL and PF Changs yucky.

Red Lobster. The prices suck to high heaven, and the food never looks like it does on the commercials. They are always buttering huge chunks of crab and cracking open lobster claws in front of some hi-def camera. When you actually get the food, it's a total let down, and doesn't even cover the plate. :(
