Please try to remember that here in America, we have this thing called "right to choose"... I'm fairly certain you may have heard about it at some point in your life. Being so - I choose to ride what I like, not what everyone else wants me to like. Last edited by Obi-Shinobi; 08-20-2010 at 01:37 PM.. |

my qualifications? Ive had 5 bikes in my time so far. ranging from a 250 to a 700.
i took the safety course on one of there 250's (nighthawk i think it was.suprisingly very comftorable) get your permit and take the course (local college should have one). If you are smart you will do one that lets you take the test for your license after the class. thats how i did it. I was on a permit for about 6 months, took the weekend course. by the end of sunday I had a M1. took the paper to the dmv and i got my license. also taking the course and passing gives you a break on your insurance premiums. It cost a couple hundred bucks for the class but its worth it. ok to your actual question. a 250 is ok. keep in mind there size if you want to take it on the freeway. my first was a 250 interceptor and i looked like an ant on the freeway (i didnt do that alot with that bike) Get a used bike. Do not waste your money on new for a first bike. reason is you WILL drop it. everyone does. Most of us only wreak once when we start out and learn to not be so cocky and are usualy more defensive afterwards (i was). It would really suck to drop all the money on a new bike to wreak it 3 months later. older bikes may not look as cool but insurance is cheaper and they are easier to wrench on. also get a haynes repair manual for your bike when you get one. lets see besides that the only other major advice i can give is no matter how hot it gets wear your leather. I learned this one the hard way too (i still have scars). besides the tank in the sun gets hot and shorts do not offer alot of insulation to that area of your body (yes this is learned from personal experiance also). ride safe

yeah those safety course are actually pretty awesome. Also, in some states it can help you out of taking a riding test at the DMV.
I don't know anything about racing style, but some good advice that benefited me on my first cruiser, was actually NOT to buy something too small... that I'd outgrow it fast. I was looking at a 200 or 250 size, and an experienced friend said, "Dude, you'll outgrow that in your first six months, and frankly, the power the say a 500 or more has, may get you out of a tight spot or trouble, where as a smaller (crusier) may not. In my first six months riding his advice proved true. It was intimidating getting used to a slight larger cruiser verses a smaller (I way 145 pounds) but very quickly I couldn't have seen myself on something that much smaller. Hope it helps, RIDE SAFE and enjoy! Also, look into a good helmet, Full face, and spine protection body armor to wear under your jacket. It not only looks bad ass, but can save your hide! |

I've been on two wheels since I was 7.
If you have the means, the best way to learn how to ride is to get a beater dirtbike and a large open field where you can dump the thing over and over again until you are super comfortable. Too many people buy a bike, take the safety course and head out into traffic. Nothing prepares you for traffic and other peoples stupidity except knowing how to handle your bike. With that being said I cuurently ride a 2005 Yamaha YZF600R. I ride this bike because of all the bikes that I test drove this was the one that I was the most comfortable on. Buy a bike that you are comfortable on, I cannot stress this enough. I've seen guys and girls who should be on smaller cruisers try to hold down a 1000cc crotchrocket and lose their life. Let's be honest, your average rider doesn't need a Suzuki Hayabusa for day to day travel. Most likely you will never get any bike you own up over 120, and if you are even near that you are insanely stupid. (Yes, I've been up over 100 with mine, but I AM insanely stupid on occasion, especially when evading police cruisers, or at least white cars that looked like a cop car, I swear.) Again, don't buy a bike because you like what it looks like, buy a bike that you are comfortable on. My riding friends are all Harley guys, my brother has a '99 Electraglide. So unless you're riding with the Pagans or Angels there is a lot of fake animosity between crotch rocket riders and Harley Riders. Most guys I know just respect anyone who is on two wheels that doesn't drive like a jackass. |
