You do it. I quit cold turkey after 13 years when my future wife wanted me to. I've been quit for 9 years now.

The key for me was a treat. Everytime I wanted a smoke i ate some high quality chocolate. not a bite but a big chunk, if that wasn't enough I ate more till it was enough. This did 3 things:
1. I got a reward for not smoking a cig = positive reinforcement 2. I got a little buzz from the choc = positive reinforcement 3. I gained weight :0 but whatever, it came off later. My advice - get yourself a flipping reward (straight shost of jack don't count) for not smoking. You deserve it. |

first two days are the hardest. keep busy, find stuff to do.
really, i just locked myself in my apartment and played Call of Duty. kind of lame, but it kept my focus on it and i i only thought of it in between rounds. it gets easier, though. just keep thinking of all the hours it's been since your last one and how just one drag of a smoke is going to undo all your work. or you can just tell everyone you know that you quit. that way if you start back up you'll be shamed everytime you hear "i thought you said you quit"

it gets much better after a week or so, after a couple months it feels like your no longer a prisoner/slave to it and life is infinitly more enjoyable. i quit and I know others that quit from reading a book (How to Stop Smoking The Easy Way by allan Carr) sounds stupid but after reading the book quitting was completely easy and not at all stressful. he words in such away( no fear tactics) that you begin to see that you are giving up nothing and gaining everything and debuncts a lot of the stigmas and excuses we use to keep somking( its all a mental state). if you don't make this time I highly suggest the book, I know it seems stupid but for the cost of a pack of smokes what are you losing?
best of luck |

Cold turkey never worked more than a few days for me, I only had success by slowly cutting back and building a tolerance to waiting/holding off.
Next month will be 9 years tobacco free. What worked for me... 1) The cigs you have just for the sake of having ie getting in your car, that kinda thing... Try holding off for 5-10 minutes, do just that for a week or 2, then... 2) Now, the ones you have out of importance/habit ie when you wake up, after sex/eating/drinking, hold off having them for 5-10 min. Try doing that for a week or 2 as well as trying NOT to have cigs for the sake of(see 1) ^), try cutting those out all together. 3) After about a month of ^^^ try waiting longer(15-30 min) to have those "must have" cigs...feel the pain, acknowledge it...accept it...and before you know it your craving is gone. It will return shortly but if you build yourself up by waiting through the craving until it goes away(temporarily) then you can successfully quit...in time. I took 2 months of putting myself through this, my body...screaming for a cig, the pain is real but you can wait 1 more minute...and another...and so on...until the craving is gone. When it comes back, take a couple of drags & put it out. Keep stretching wait times on the "must haves" and eliminate the non essential cigs altogether. When you're down to 5 a day try the nic gum but read the directions & follow them ! People make the mistake of buying a patch or gum and saying "yah I'm on the patch/gum, it'll do the quitting for me", that is so wrong. You HAVE TO put yourself through pain & suffering on your own to quit, just start slow & gradual. Give yourself months not days or weeks. No pain no gain. Keep in mind, aids don't "work" they only "help". I quit almost 9 years ago but I swear I could start any day, even at this point so remember also to never let your guard down and never assume you have it beat.

Almost a year ago I quit cold turkey (smoked a pack a day for eleven years so, bout the same). It sucks for about a week, for a couple more weeks you will chew gum and pens like a made man. About two or three months in you will just start to notice how you hold your hand like you have a smoke in it. But just stick with it. Good luck.

Took me a couple of months to get over it.
Heard you should change your toothbrush because there's nicotine in there too. Even after quitting there'll be times when you really want one, like when you drive by a bar on St. Patrick's day and everyone is smoking and drinking. Just remember how shitty smoking makes walking up the stairs and you'll be okay. |

I'm glad to hear your doing this, bro. My Dad died this past June, his lungs just couldn't go on. Especially after he had the surgery to remove the lung cancer.
You can do this, man, tough it out.
