I'm a newbie to the smartphone generation...
my friend said she is selling her iphone 3gs and offered it to me. I already have an account with at&t. If I buy this iphone, is it as simple as putting my sim card in the iphone and thats it? Or is there something else that has to be done to get this to work? Oh, and what is jailbreaking and unlocking? Do I need to do that to get the phone to work? Any help and advice would be appreciated, this is all greek to me. Thanks.

Your SIM card should work in the iphone as far as i know.
You'll have to sign-up with Apple/iTunes to use the Apps Store and such Jailbreaking can be done online now, google it for more info. Unlocking you don't need if you are already on AT&T |

Cool thanks Commander...
Do I have to buy an additional plan or something like that to use the web browsing on the phone?

You have to have a data plan. As far as I know this is with ATT and all smart phone providers. I think their lowest one is 79.99 but I could be wrong.
I would call ATT and tell them that your adding an Iphone and see what the best options are.

If you don't want an all in plan, ATT recently added data plans, read here about them:

I think it depends on what kind of phone you are using right now. When I upgraded my AT&T Razor to my wife's old 3G iphone the guy at the AT&T store said I needed to get a new SIM card. So, I basically lost my contacts.
My recommendation to avoid any hassles is to take your old phone and your friends phone to an AT&T store and tell them what you want to do. They'll set you up so that you keep your existing phone number and you shouldn't have any issues when you take it home to finish the setup with iTunes. Also, you will need to get a data plan if you want to take advantage of the web, e-mail, app store, iTunes, and other such functions. You shouldn't have to jailbreak the phone to get it to work on your existing AT&T account. The purpose of jailbreaking is to a) use it on another carrier and/or b) use apps and other programs not authorized by Apple and/or c) change functionality such as recording time on videos for example. Jailbreaking the phone may be something you will have to wait since I'm sure the store will upgrade you to the latest OS. Which I'm pretty sure you won't be able to jail break right away. Each time Apple puts out new updates to the OS they patch up more cracks that would normally be used to jailbreak the phone. If you want to jailbreak it later, just don't ever upgrade the OS anymore. Eventually, someone will put out a hack for it. |

they changed the data plan thing, they tweaked my old plan and my bill dropped by 50 bucks a month, id deff talk to a rep about it because maybe they can even drop your monthly bill a lil bit
I just got an iphone and my data plan was 25 for 2gigs of data i believe.

One thing I forgot to mention. Since you are buying the phone outright from your friend don't let them get you into some 2 year contract. There would be no reason for it if your phone is paid for. All you need is a data plan on your account.

also make sure that they aren't "extending" your contract when you make changes.AT&T has a bad habit of re-upping your 2yrs without telling you when they make minor changes to your account and whatnot.
