I don't usually get into CAUSES... But every once in a while one comes around that without a doubt in my mind, I can support 100%.
I know with everything else, I can be belligerant and overly voice my opinion blindly (Tankers know that for a fact) There's a group out there that does what it can to encourage kids to read. They set up charity and auction events to help bring inspiring books into schools and "problem" areas in cities. The group is simply called Kids Need To Read Kids Need To Read | Facebook This is a quote from their own page. Kids Need to Read is a national nonprofit charity focusing on promoting childhood literacy and addressing the deplorable state of library funding that currently exists in the United States. Donating exciting, new books to schools, public libraries, health clinics and shelters in need, the foundation works to develop a lifelong love of reading in all children. ... Now, I'm the last person to start preaching about this or that. And I'm TRYING not to. But ONE thing I firmly believe in is if this world is ever going to change, it has to begin with the next generation, and the first step towards a better world is knowledge, cause once that's attained, that's when the social, economical, racial, and political bullshit will end. You don't even have to DO anything! Just spread the word. Even if ONE person on your friends list "gets" it, that's ONE step closer to that sought after better world. "befriend" them, suggest them to others. If your really ambitious contact them to see what you can do in your area! Contact schools and libraries, after-school clubs and see if THEY know about this group. KNTR has e-bay auctions with really cool stuff that you can buy and the money goes into the organization, towards what they are setting out to do! I found out about KNTR after I got Mr. Nathan Fillion on my friends list over on Myspace. I finally found them on here...and those who know me know the bromance I have with Mr. Fillion, Firefly/Serenity, and all things browncoat...and I will say, KNTR means a lot more to me. So...In an overly AMBITIOUS move... I'm asking any and all of you who consider me friend (Hell, even if you don't!)... Just for ONE DAY, August 18th, 2010, to have nothing on your News Feed status except something concerning Kids Need To Read. Whether it's Facebook, Myspace, Tweeter, whatever. Even if it's just the link to their FB page (see above) Think of it as a Birthday present to me. But PLEASE... just spread the word, cause once it starts... You Can't Stop The Signal.

Don't have facebook, but I support this. The literacy (or lack thereof) in the country is something very personal to me.
My mom couldn't get me to read no matter how much she sat with me and tried. Then one day I was in a bookstore with her, and asked her for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic (by Archie). It's one of the reasons I think it sucks that comics are so idiotically expensive nowadays. If you can find something they're into then there's a window of opportunity to exploit. Manga has a good shot though. The most important thing to to find something they can latch onto and explore on their own. |

Parents need to read to their children, that's where it starts. my wife spends every day reading to our daughter, reads to her every night before going to bed and takes her to the library reading time once a week. When I come home my daughter, after playing with me for a little while, always grabs a book and wants me to read to her.
that's where it starts -- with the parents and when children are very young. |

that's where it starts -- with the parents and when children are very young. Those are their top priority. HUGE MAD props for how your raising your kids, that's where it starts. More need to be like you and yours in order to make a difference in the years to some.

Manga has a good shot though. The most important thing to to find something they can latch onto and explore on their own. Read comics to your kids and they see and hear about heroes, it'll spark their interest (hopefully) and the more they delve into certain characters, the more they enrich their lives. As cliche' now as it sounds, my hero growing up was Wolverine...but mind you, this was the mid 80s to early 90s Wolvie. Truely the heart and soul of the old X-Men series. The Samurai and father figure. That era figure shaped a big part of the person I am now. And also as cliche as it sounds, in more current times, the works of Joss Whedon echos back to those times. He has a pure sense of family to most of what he writes or creates, and transponds race, society, and all that other BS When I'm not drunk, I'll put up other links for KNTR that dosen't involve FB, MySpace or any of the other social networking stuff. ...Or hell, just google it. But regardless, This is an important thing, whether you have kids or not.
