Yeah, I know I can't dive into this as I have family concerns, money to save, insurance to look into (As well as trying to be more multi-lingual), but due to a lot of things, I'd rather get more info before I embark on this in a few years.
I had a friend take one and she suggested a work visa...is it only good for one country/continent? (I'm planning to go to places in Europe and Asia) And what kind of jobs would be good to get?

What is a Gap Year?
Do you mean you are going to quit your job and travel abroad? |

It's going to be really hard to drop everything for a year to go traipsing over in Europe. Now, if you were planning on moving over there, it might be a good idea. I don't know your age, or your situation so I can't really advise too much.

I myself am already taking a "Gap Year". As much as the new PoC line is new and appealing, I just can't get myself into spending more than 9 bucks a pop for every new Movie figure that came out, only to have them on clearance for 75% off. I'd rather hold off for now, sell a few figs and take care of my priorities first.

Here's the thing with taking a touring holiday. You have to have some money stored up. Because although it may be better in other places of the world, the economy as a whole is in the can. I've talked to alot of European types who do this here in America. But it's very planned out.
1) They work endlessly for at least a year, storing the backup funds. 2) They travel with friends in order to share expenses. 3) They find a city of interest and maintain that as their home base and then travel from there. 4) They find part-time work (usually bussing tables or cleaning hotel rooms) to earn spending money while a holiday. 5) After about 4-6 months, they either find other friends to take over the lease on the apartment and move on to another city (usually from like LA to NY) and do it again until their funds or their Visa expire. If you want to explore this kind of adventure domestically, you can purchase and RV and simply roam the country. You'll still need plenty of saved up cash. But I know people who do this and to earn side money, go to conventions and festivals for side work.

taking the European/Asia journey = I wanna whore through Europe so it won't follow me at home.
you've been reading too much eat, pray, love. no matter how romantic that book and movie make it want to appear, all it is about is a aging chick in a midlife crisis who wishes she would have whored through Europe at 19 and wants to do it in her 40's. |
