I am laughing here because I know almost certainly if someone you didn't know did that - not allow figures to get to the shelf - it would be scalping and wrong and terrible and they would be horrible people. Hilarious.

I worked for TRU for a little over a year. The GM at my particular store was the worst. He used to say on several occasions that he hated kids and hated toys. Great career move, buddy.
It had its high points. I was able to check out all the new stuff coming out and the employee discount was definitely helpful. I even had a secret little stash where I would keep stuff until payday. Fair? Maybe not. But those are the breaks. The low points probably outweigh the good though. Lousy pay. Horrible management and other employees who don't know squat about the product that is sold there. Christmas time was hell. Finding dirty diapers behind boxes on the shelves was always a nice little surprise. One time I asked about getting more hours and my manager told me that they couldn't give me any more and if I didn't like it I could quit. I took them up on that. I worked at TRU one year for seasonal help doing overnight stocking. I enjoyed it and always got to grab the stuff I wanted fresh from the cases.
I went on to become an assistant manager for KB Toys. That was he best job I have ever had. I miss it. All toys, 100%. No clothes, no grocery items, etc. Just toys. I enjoyed working retail. The hours are what made me quite once I got married and started having kids. |

As a kid, going to TRU was like going to Disneyland, I loved it. Even as an adult, I still get that feeling when I walk into TRU, it's a genuine excitement.
I often thought that when I retire from my full time job, I would love to work at TRU part time. I imagine that I would get first crack at all of the exclusives and spend my time helping kids and parents find the right toy. Working in a five star Las Vegas Resort/Casino, I realize that going somewhere in your free time and working there are two very different things. As an employee, You have to deal with "Superstar" managers, many of whom place company memorandums above true leadership. You have to deal with uninspired coworkers who don't share your work ethic or your attention to detail. You have to deal with customers who don't understand the behind the scenes processes and therefore have unreasonable expectations. Still, despite these things, if you know why you are there and you know how to deal with humans in a successful way, you can take from it whatever you want and create your own experience according to your own desires. |

But I don't think they are taking hordes of figures. Just picking what they want, for themselves. Not to resell for a 200% markup.

When I was growing up my best friend and I always said we wanted to both work at Toys R Us unloading trucks so we could get the newest WWF Hasbro figures. Now all these years later I still think a seasonal job at a Toy store would be fun.
Is there any Tankers out there that have worked at Toys R Us or that still work at one? Also, what is it like there? Are the hours flexible? Really just wanting to know a little about this store from an employee standpoint.

My manager there was about the only thing that made it tolerable. He was also a toy collector, and a good guy. But he was trying to get up into corporate, and as he put it, that meant he didn't see the sun from Thanksgiving to New Years. He slept in the store, ate twice a day at the mall food court, and occasionally went home to shower.
But if that sounds like a 'good' job, go right ahead. |

I worked at a Toys R Us for about 2 months unloading trucks and stocking the large items when they used to put everything on top of the 10 foot shelves. There was no employee discount the pay was crap the hours were crap and the asst. manager who started a month after me was crap. My sister works there and hates it. I wouldn't suggest it unless it's just a second job for a little extra cash for buying Joes. Standing on an off ramp with a sign that says "Need money to buy GI Joes." might get you more money.
