I worked at one here in Ohio for a while and like someone else said, depends on the management like all jobs. Pay wasn't great and thanksgiving/christmas time was crazy hectic(to be expected). It has its ups and downs. But you work in a toy store for crying out loud! If you cant make it fun 90% of the time you might as well move on.

I know a dude who works at one. He told me that it was about like working at Wal-Mart (with all the bad and good things that come with it).
He said that the most rewarding parts were helping kids find the toy that they want, and helping parents find "that toy". His knowledge of action figures and video games made many a child happy. He was also big on telling parents where to get the toy if they did not have one in stock, which brought more customers to him. If he was paid commission, he said he'd be wealthy. He said the down side of it is the parents, and not the children. Kids are kids, and they do kid stuff and want kid things... which is understandable. He told me the worst parents were in two groups: The parents who take their kids to Toys 'r Us and get pissed when the kid asks for a toy. Many of these parents would be over oogling and going ga-ga over baby clothes for some kid that wasn't even their own and their kids would be unattended. He watched one polite little kid walk over to the Transformers, ask him to help him find a (whichever the little bitty cheap ones are) Optimus Prime, and he walked over to his mom with it. She started yelling and snatching at him, then proceeded to accuse my friend of trying to exploit the child and make him buy something. She reported him to the manager of the store... and he reported her to Child Protective Services. The other parents he told me about are the ones who do an awesome job at Christmas and decide to wait until Christmas eve to go shopping for their kids, then get pissed at the store when they don't have a Wii or some other high-demand holiday toy. After demanding that they "check in the back", these parents will be rude as hell. |

I worked at a TRU many years ago. Pay was minimum wage, no employee discount (dunno if this is still the case) and I just worked the register for hours on end. This was during Xmas season and the lines could be horrible. It was not fun at all.
I worked at a KB one Xmas season, and that was actually fun. For some reason they never let any of the guys work the registers, except one, so I would stock the store and help people out. I always got assigned the action figure aisle, so that was cool. I don't really remember very many scalpers but when I look back on it there were a few. TRU is a lot more fun to shop at than work at, that's for sure. |

Be prepared to clean up kids puke, spilled juice with a mop, and overflowing toilets with a vacuum cleaner. Otherwise, don't work there if you can't do jobs other people can do themselves and get paid for it.

Stoner is the Iron Fist who runs the truck unloading docks and Vulcan Raven just does whatever. They are a helluva team and are willing to help US out. Joes usually don't make it to the pegs until VR and Stoner have went though there first!!!!

I worked at TRU when I was in college back in '97 when the Star and Stripes set and all the other original reissues were released. they went straight from the stockroom to the register.
it's a fine job for what it is. my job was building the bikes and power wheels and unloading trucks. |

NOOOO!!
its awful, well unless you like no money and really inept bosses. then go for it. there used to be a web site devoted to workers bashing it.(should tell you something) and they have been in money trouble since 2000 so would'nt advise working there. |

I didn't work at a Toys R Us, but my first year of grad school at Boston I worked at a K-B in a ghetto mall.
It sucked. Pay was terrible. Hours were awful. You feel like getting up at 3 a.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving, so you can be at work at 4? Good for you. Want to unload the trucks so you can get first crack at the figures? You'll be coming in at 5 a.m., working hard to unload that sumbitch in the winter cold, and getting paid minimum wage to do it. I did this every week I worked there. My manager there was about the only thing that made it tolerable. He was also a toy collector, and a good guy. But he was trying to get up into corporate, and as he put it, that meant he didn't see the sun from Thanksgiving to New Years. He slept in the store, ate twice a day at the mall food court, and occasionally went home to shower. But if that sounds like a 'good' job, go right ahead.
